Please help and advise a noob

Ok, cheers, i can follow that, and i can find my way around a bios happily. Just dont know nothing about mem timing, but i can follow what your saying. How will i know when i get the mem timing spot on? Do i just try overclocking the chip as much as it will go and see what happens. And does it really make a big different going from 1 gig of ram to 2 gig ? Thanks again :)

Oh, i just found out thru everest that my memory settings are 2-3-2-5 CR1 . Does that make any sense why i cant overclock more. Im nipping out in 10 mins but im back at 7 pm ish :) So hopefully i aint bored anyone to tears and maybe we can get this sorted :)

Yeah they'll be a bit too tight at 2-3-2-5.
And a good bit of stress testing will tell you if your timings are spot on.

Okay, so what should i loosen them too. I got two different answers ,lol. Thats like standing me in a round room and telling me to get in the corner. Shoulld i go for 2-3-3-8 ? :)

2-3-3-8 probably won't work. 1gb sticks don't usually like CAS 2. Start with 3-3-3-8 and work your way down until the computer won't boot. Then go back to the next best and test it.

So far so great. I cant believe it. I am at 3-3-3-8. And my pc is running at 2.6 ghz. Trying for 2.7 now :) I really wanna try for the 3 gig, but i dont think i got a hope in hell.I know my opteron 165 can do it, its the best stepping for an opti 165. I will try get to 2.7 and brb. :)

What's your vdimm at? Been doing a little reading up and they may be able to do 250Mhz at 2.5-3-3-10 at 2.9v.

Once you get near 3Ghz you'll probably have to drop the ram divider down to 133. At 3Ghz that will dop your RAM down to 221Mhz. At that stage you may well be able to run it at 2-3-2-6 or thereabouts.

Im backkkk. Got my pc at 2.9 ghz each core. Timmings are 3-3-3-8 and i cant tell what the vcore is. I nearly got to 3 gig but it wouldnt boot. My pc is running very well though. Even better than i ever expected.Should i leave it now or tweak it. My fsb is at 320 :)

If you're over 300 then drop the HTT multiplier (might be called the LDT Multiplier) down to x3.
The vdimm is probably set to 2.6v atm. That's the normal stock speed. Try to find it and give it a boost. A bit more vcore voltage would help too.
If that doesn't work then drop the ram multiplier down to 133 and lower the timings to around 2-3-2-6.

I put the htt on 3.And i have upped the volts but my pc wouldnt boot.My benchmarks in everest are very high, and my pc is really flying. Scared now incase i goose it. I only wanted to get back to 2.7 ghz, now im at 2.9 ghz. I thought this memory was junk, and thanks to your help its way up. 3 gog would be nice, but just too scared to mess now, lol. Nipping out for 30 mins but back soon. My msn is [email protected] .Be great to have a chat and bore u some more ,lol. many thx, and i really mean that.I got this memory ddead cheap on ebay £100, thought it was too good to be true, but its working, :)

£100  That's damn good business, especially with the way RAM prices are atm.

Do a fair bit of stress testing with Orthos to see if it really is stable. You may need to lower the clock slightly to get it stable in games.

Nice wicked bargain mate, yeah stress it a bit i feel it might crap out in games? if not good job and you saved yourself a packet.
Btw what are your cpu temps?

My cpu temp is 45c on desktop, pc been on for 1 hour now. I know this thing is running fast, but it needs fine tuning now for my games. Its fast though, and i mean fast.Cant beleive how memory timings can make a big difference.Ive learned something today :) I used stress prime and after 2 mins it went beep beep and turned red.My pc works great but i guess something is a little bit a miss. And yes, i paid £100 for 2 gig of corsair 3500LL pro brand new off ebay, its the only time i ever got a bargain.:) Any suggests about how to make this pc a little more stable, oh, and thanks again, im really pleased with the results so far, thankyou.

Drop it back to 2.8Ghz and prime it. If it passes that then raise it a bit and try again. Is that 45c at idle? And what are you using to read the temp?

Im using Everest Pro to read the temp and i look in the bios, it seems pretty acurate.I will lower it to 2.8ghz tomorrow, cant afford to kill my pc as im bidding on ebay, lol.I will make a post about 10.30 am. Cheers and thanks for the advise :)

Ok, i have knocked it back to 2.85 ghz, seems more stable. Everything is fast and well.No alarms going off. I guess we just need to tighten the mem timing a bit now, or do we leave them ?

Well your RAM's running at 262Mhz so you may not be able to tighten the timings any more. 3-3-3-8 is already pretty damn tight for that speed.
Lower the RAM divider to 133 and see if she'll run at 2-3-2-6. Try 2-3-3-6 if she doesn't. Then run some memory bandwidth tests to see whether it's any better than running the 166 divider at 3-3-3-8. The A64's prefer tight timings over sheer speed and the 133 divider may give better results.
If she's fine on the 133 divider then you may be able to loosen the timings again and start pushing up the fsb again. There's a good chance that running the 166 divider is what's stopping you hitting 3Ghz.
