Ok i went onto nero...Put a none copyrighted blade 2 dvd in... which i bought form a normall shop... for 6.99...i backed the uncopyrighted dvd onto my computer...i still have the original..so its only a back up and not going to be sold or anything . .(nothing ilegal upto now as far as im aware)

Last time I checked the studio's had not relinquished their control over commercial DVD's and that will include Blade II, therefore the disk that you backed up was most definitely still the intellectual property of another. As previously stated, rightly or wrongly under current UK law it is illegal to make copies of media that are deemed to be covered by copyright.

A good clue would be that most commercial DVD's have some means of copy protection, that needs to be circumvented prior to making a backup. Just because this is now a trivial process does not make it legal.

Wow ,this is turning into one hell of a confusing thread ,copyright laws and the rest of it . Another confusing thing :

" i am left with 24 files....there are 4 main files 500mb and 3 1gb ones....if i just click on the first main folder (1gb)...it plays,

Is that not just 7 files ? . What are the file extensions ? are they vobs ,mpegs ,avi ?? .Can you not just put all the files in 1 folder ?

You say " if i just click on the first main folder (1gb)...it plays," Do you not mean file ? Are all your files in separate folders ??

No Jimmy, it appears you have a none copy protected Blade 2 disc. And that's the reason why you can copy it with Nero. Your still mixing up copy protection and copy right. Just because something doesn't have copy protection does not automatically mean its not copyrighted.

Blade2 is still under copyright and the studio would certainly not release it without any form of copy protection. If it really is a region free non copy protected copy of Blade2 you have, then I am afraid you have a pirated copy there my friend.

You cannot make a backup of copyrighted DVD's legally in the UK - even if they don't have copy protection. End of story.

dont find end of story very clever to put lol ..but yeh the last 4 or 5 posts have been great help and MUCH clearer thanks

Backing up anything other than software is illegal, and so is breaking copy protection, it's even stickied in the hi-fi forum....

But the mods don't care so it seems it's alright to post about it.
