Please help me OC my Commodore (Q9400)

I've got a fan on the NB, but I'm not sure about temps. Is there an app for measung motherboard component temps? What's a safe temp for the NB?

I'm sure I read somewhere that the HT needs to go up a LOT as it carries data for the RAM. Hence the possible memory related error message...

N/B temp safe side I would say below 70C.

I'm not sure that is correct about HT as I thought I had read that it increases stress on the Northbridge, in fact I thought lowering the HT made the N/B more stable.

Also you might want to lower your S/B voltage to stock setting as it should have no impact on CPU/Memory overclock.

With my memory set to Sync and my bus speed at 400MHz (QDR = 1600MHz) I currently have the following advanced memory settings (my memory is similar spec to yours OCZ Reaper HPC 8500C5).

  • CAS Latency = 4.0
  • RAS to CAS Delay = 4.0
  • RAS Precharge = 4.0
  • Cycle time = 10
  • Bank cycle time = 15
  • Command rate = 1T

Thanks for the info. :)

I'll try popping those advanced memory settings in. I'm going to look into the NB temp now with the app given to me yesterday.

The lowest I can manually set the SB to is 1.5v, so having it at 1.6 shouldn't be too harsh, but i'll lower it nonetheless.

No dice I'm afraid. :(

I didn't make any alterations to the RAM, as I don't understand the ones you mentioned. They don't appear the same as what's in my advanced options either.

Anyway... I upped the NB to 1.6 but it made no difference. I still get the same random freezes, blue screen of death: "IRQL_IS_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL" :(

How frustrating. If anyone can lend a hand I would be very grateful! :)

OK, so as this is looking very much like a RAM related issue, what can I do? Putting it back to stock settings and voltages makes no odds.

I.e, is there something I can do to COMPLETELY take the RAM out of the OC'ing equation? When I was getting crashes before, due to the Vcore being too low and the NB also being too low, they were all fairly random and looked different. But when upping to 3.4ghz, the crash is ALWAYS the same.

I found this on www.windowsreferrence.com:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

STOP 0×0000000A

By default vista will reboot quickly after a BSOD. If the user had time to notice, usually both of these errors will be on the screen. The computer just reboots so quickly that the user only has time to notice one or the other.

The most common cause of this error is attempting to install Vista in a computer with more than 3 gigs of RAM. This error predictably occurs around the 60-64% mark in “Completing the Upgrade.”

Removing enough memory to get below 3 gigs will allow the installation to continue.

This error may also be caused by a bad or incompatible controller, failing or over clocked memory, or a piece of hardware that Vista does not support. Removing and disconnecting non essential hardware during install may be helpful.

It's interesting what's mentioned about the OC'd RAM. But I've set my RAM back to default and it still does it. Is it possible that my RAM is still being OC'd when I up the FSB even though I think I'm not OC'ing it?

Can you list all the current setting in the Bios that got you to 3.2ghz please?! I have the P5N-D and just picked up a Q9400 for $169.00 here in the US - it was too good of a deal to pass-up. I have pretty much the same setup as you except the video cards and wanted to try your setting to see if I can get the thing to OC to 3.2 as well.

Thanks

Hi Toadus i got the same board with diff chip(e8500) and this post has been very interesting as i prepare for my 1st overclock, just gotta wait on a retention bracket for my cpu cooler as i borked a pin installing my cpu cooler i,ll let ya know how i get on with a c2d

Oh OK, good luck to you. I've heard that this board is a pain for quads as opposed to duals, so hopefully you'll be fine.

I'm gutted I can't get more than 3.2ghz out of it, especially as I've now got 2 GTX 280's in SLi. The fact that I get the same IRQL message makes me feel it's something really simple that's causing the problem, as it's not a typical problem you would have when you OC your processor too much. I've been Googling it nearly every day, but there's no obvious solution. People often say that it's a fault with the RAM, but the fact that everything works fine at 3.2ghz makes me feel it must be something else...

If anyone can lend a hand, PLEASE let me know. :)

Any questions on BIOS setting Thedog45, just give me a shout.

I've seen that thread on Overclockers, thanks for the tip though. If I find anything out that might help us, I'll be sure to let you know.

Yes, I manually set the RAM voltage. I think I've got it set to 2.17v or something similar. Does CPU-Z tell you what your RAM voltage should be for different speeds?

I'm running whatever the latest version was roughly 3 weeks ago. That's when I flashed the BIOS.
