Please help settle an argument ...

Agree completely. It's bizarre we even need to display them.

May as well drive around with a cover note and the V5 taped to the window as well if we follow the logic of the stupid tax disc rules.

I would assume it's so the offence can be detected without the use of ANPR. It's widely used but doesn't mean it is everywhere, never see them out in the villages or in the police cars in those areas.

I've still got an old tax disc shown as the car was sorn, due to the new annoying rules,so I taxed it with the previous keepers address and I'm just driving it anyway as it won't flag up on ANPR.

If I get pulled I can explain and hope for the best and if I have to take it on the chin I will.

From the cops I deal with in work none of them would bother as it's hardly the crime of the century.

Probably to cover for DVLA incompetence. If you have a valid tax disc in your window you are in a much better position if "computer says no".

I agree with this, a couple of years ago I had to send a photocopy of my tax disc to the DVLA because it was showing that it wasn't taxed on their systems.

My sister in law has has computer says no. Stopped by the police as no valid tax disc displayed and came up on the computer as untaxed. Her disc was months out of date. After some digging she realised that she'd paid for it and the money had come our of her account but she'd never been sent a new disc and they hadn't updated the database.

On showing proof of payment at local DVLA office they agreed out was their mistake and all fines etc were canceled (even though technically she committed an offence by failure to display).

You might get a telling off for failing to display it but all the fuzz will do is run a check on the car and if it comes back as taxed she'll be fine

While I'm on the topic I do think that scrapping VED and putting it on fuel would be sensible (even though that would cost me more, as I pay a tenner a year).

I'd also put 3rd party insurance on fuel to, thereby automatically covering everyone that doesn't drive a leaf or whatnot...

After all of the hassle trying to get this tax thing sorted out and the bloody thing's now sitting in Tescos car park as it conked out on her last night. She's still not speaking to me though :)

This.

Any ANPR will show the car is taxed, and the chance of getting stopped and pulled for failure to display is very very slim. Also it's not a motoring offence so only a fine and no points.

TBH the way I would see it, they have your money so drive your car. It's not hurting anyone and the tax is paid. If you get caught the you may get done for failure to display but IMO that is now a bull **** offence now the police can tell instantly if the car is taxed or not.
