Please help someone with no idea - NAS type media adaptor thingies

Hurrah, at last.

3rd WMP74 arrived and fully working.
Still not as good as my Sony BDP-S370 though.

just installed a WMP74, put a USB disk I had kicking round on it and a 8 quid wireless adaptor, does everything I need it to do and at under 70 quid for everything you can't got wrong

one thing I have noticed with the VMP74 and a USB drive, it is desperately slow when copying stuff too it over the wireless network, anyone else find it slow ?

seems to stream iplayer etc fine though

I've noticed the same however think about it this way.
If you copied a 700 meg file over it would take 2 minutes (maybe more, maybe less) but if you streamed a 700 meg file it would take 90 mins (or whatever).
In other words streaming is going very slow.

Can't speak for wireless as I use Homeplugs for mine, but copying directly to a USB stick on it was a pretty good speed for me, which was a pleasant surprise.

I'm seriously in love with the little thing. Can't believe how good it is for the price, but dmpoole's experience has me expecting it to b0rk any time now, haha!

well playing around with my Playon!hd Mini2 I am very happy with it so far , I am using a old shuttle for the nas, the shuttle only has 2 IDE connectors on-board so using both off the sockets, one cable is internally > 1TB hard Drive, the other 2 cables go to the outside off case via the back-slot and is extended via a IDE cable extender so other 2 1TB hard drives are on the top off the shuttle which resides in the cupboard on a wired network.

Using Windows xp.

the Adaptors I am using to convert IDE to SATA are
Serial ATA SATA to PATA IDE 133/100 Adapter Converter, got them from the bay.

PS the shuttle is a
Shuttle XPC, SB51G. http://www.shuttle.eu/_archive/older/en/fb51.htm

have you tried to place a laptop or another wireless device in the same place as the WMP74to see if its the signal problem or could there be a update to the unit for fixes etc?

I sit with laptop very close to it all the time with no problems, firmware is at latest, I have a powerline unit nearby, might just put a cheap switch on that and use it wired

it may be that the wireless signal is to low, so that the WMP74 is not able to play back the files properly?

Just an update on my latest toy to go with the Sony BDP-S370 and Viewsonic VMP74.
I decided I wanted a NAS and after extensive reading and what my now & future requirements were going to be, I opted for a Seagate GoFlex Home 2TB for £110.
It does what it says on the tin and all my PC's and media devices can access it.
I've logged in from my works PC and I can get at all my files but more importantly I've set my daughters up with accounts and they can upload all their data from Uni as well as getting files that Daddy as acquired for them.
My only gripe is that the copying of files only goes at the speed of the network which is slooooooooooooooow.
I'm now at the point where all my files are over but it took 2 days to do it however the odd 700 meg file copying over now is no problem.

That's what I did. Picked up a TP-Link 4-port unmanaged Gigabit switch for a stonking price (<£16) from a well known major online retailer. Works a charm and now feeds the Xbox and Blu-ray player as well with none of the connection issues I had to sporadically deal with on EVERYTHING using wireless.
