Hi There,

I have been building my mates computer

spec is

a64 3200
ASRock 939 Dual SATA
1024 (2 x 512 RAM)
9600 pro 256 (AGP)

I have been trying to install windows on it and it gets post, and then starts to run the windows setup, it does the whole thing where it detects all the devices etc, and then just as you are about to get the screen where you choose which drive to install windows on it doesnt work at all, im using a normal legitimate Windows xp CD ROM,

all parts are new, i have flashed the CMOS but to no avail.

Please help if you can, any comments welcome!

what...

... messages if any are displayed... Does the screen just go blank? does it lock up?... Maybe you haven't installed the SATA drivers during the DOS based part of the install.. the F6 bit.

purrrrrrrr

If you dont have BIOS 1.30 or above, your CPU is possibly not supported. Try upgrading the BIOS.

I think this is the board you have?

There would be a message at POST if it was going to reject the CPU. You need to press F6 to install the SATA drivers when you see the prompt to install 3rd party drivers :) It will then prompt you to put the floppy disk in which came with the motherboard et voila  At least I think it's that anyway... :o

only reason I said above is because I had a similar problem with a pentium asrock board where the pentium 630 was not supported. It did exactly as you said, it just froze before you could set set up windows. I upgraded the BIOS and it worked.

I must admit if a cpu was not supported I would have thought it would have told you at the post screen. But hey, it worked when I did it. Atleast you can try if all else fails.

As said it sounds like you just need the SATA drivers to detect your harddisk. If you don't have the floppy you'll be able to get them from the motherboard manufacturers site.

Wicked thanks guys i think that i do need to install the SATA drivers so i will give that a try and let you know ! :)

Ok we didnt get a disk with the motherboard only a CDROM. The only problem is that i have even used another harddrive (IDE) and tried loading windows 98 on it but still the same problem occurs........

Any other suggestions?

thanks in advance

kiz

In BIOS, IDE Configuration, set SATA port that you are using into 'Enabled' rather than 'Auto'. If SATA, change operation mode to 'non-RAID' & if SATAII - 'IDE'. That way you don't need any drivers/F6/etc when installing Windows.

For other Operation Modes you will need a floppy drive & disk with drivers loaded (can be found on supplied CD-ROM)

Find some more advice/help here :)

Thanks bios version is normal and the 3200 is supported, and i've tried with all those settings and still no avail?

I will try and switch to using the other non SATA-II ports and see if that makes a difference.......else im gonna have to find a floppy drive....as he didn't order one with his computer.......

is it possible to just get the drivers and stuff off the CD and put it onto the floppy and then load them? as when you press f6 it asks you for the manufacturers floppy drive.

Right, try reading this, thing oddly known as a manual- page 20 :p

Other thing to check:

1.) Do a CMOS reset

2.) Are the jumpers set correctly for your CPU- ie is it AM2 or 939

:)
