PLEASE READ: Crucial Ballistix DDR2 recommended Voltage change

I've just had to RMA my Ballistix Tracer PC8500 bought last January.
I had it set to 2.2v on my IP35 Pro as recommended by Overclockers and until recently Crucial themselves.
However if you check out the Crucial website

the recommended voltage for this and other Ballistix modules is now 2.0v.
I don't know if this revision should apply to all Ballistix or just the most recent production run. Maybe someone can give a definitive answer to this.
In the meantime I've just dropped the voltage on the new Ballistix I bought today to keep my system running while OcUK test the faulty ones.

Yup i noticed this as well and last week crucial had two types of 8500 tracers available..

BL12864AL106A (2.0v)
BL12864AL1065 (2.2v not showing on crucial site no more)

quite simply they can shove their ballistix range, i must have had 5 sets die on me now and i don't abuse voltage....both DDR and DDR2 and just had my 10th Anniversary sticks die last week which i still need to RMA.

never had any problems with any other makes of ram before anybody starts pointing the finger at a dodgy psu or similar.

One my sticks of Crucial Ballistix Tracer RED 4GB memory died two days ago....:(

And i only run them at 800 2T 2.0volt

I had the same, one stick of tracer red died on me running stock frequencies at 2v, just started producing tons of errors. Why i'm looking at the gskill pi series for my next 4gb kit.

I have the lower set and have just emailed them to find out if it applies to them as well. I will let you know what they say.

Personally i have'nt had a single problem with them while running at 2.2v in a board that they are not supposed to work in. They removed the Ballistix ram from the Asus P5E compatiability list a couple of months after i had bought them. I have had them running at 5-4-4-9 and even up to 1172mhz with slacker timings.

If i was buying now though i would go with one of the excellent Gskill pc2 8000 or pc2 8500 kits.
 
why on earth do people still buy ballistix? why? I mean really why?

Its like burning your hand in a fire then sticking it right back in again.

So true, and it's about time they at least tried to improve the Ballistix' lifetime.
 
I have 2x 1Gb single sided ballistix 8500 running at over 1066 for more than a year now with no issues at 2.2v
 
thats great having a work set of ballistix and everything, but that doesnt help the people who've had 4 or 5 sets die on them under recommended voltage.


ram should not die. at all. there's somethign seriously wrong at crucial and its really time they sorted it out.
 
I had 4 x 1GB 6400 Ballistix all die at once, i could not boot a single stick!!

RMA service is good (thx god) but what is up with crucial, ive still got the 4 sticks sat in their antistatic bags untouched, i bought some corsair Dominator to replace them.
I am another one that will not be buying Crucial ram in the near future.

As for selling them, cantgive them away :(

I have the 2.2v ones. That's the recommended voltage under EPP, at least. Thing is, they've never been happy running at that voltage. I think I dropped them down to 1.9v...

I have been blaming my eVGA 780i up 'til now - still the most likely culprit in my situation, I think.
 
I had 4 sticks, worked fine for 3 months or so, then they died 1 by one.

RMA is excellent, have four here now, but selling them on, got some nice reaperx 2x2gbs cheap :)

The change to single sided is'nt recent at all. I had to rma 2x1g sticks of Ballistix on 7/2/2008 and got single sided replacements, which i sold straight away :). Why on earth peeps still buy Crucial's rubbish is beyond me. This sort of thread pops up so often with Crucial, it may as well be "Stickied".
