Yes it's absolutely ridiculous, people were still posting 800x600 56k friendly screens in the PC screenshot thread until I started a high res 'I don't care about your sucky Internet' thread.

It's unlikely sigs being a few kb over 20 would make any difference to your surfing experience on a 512k connection, so why you can even bring up 8Mb as an argument baffles me frankly.

Simple fact is anybody on this forum is going to have a half decent connection.

The signatures are kept small mostly because of neatness. I (and many others) hate when signatures are like 300 pixels high and about 8239048 pixels wide

(okay, I'm going OTT here but still).

The forums are neat and functional, and for what they do, do it fine and dandy.

We're not talking about the dimensions though, just file sizes.

but theres no need for the 20kb restriction any more.

You could happily set to the restriction to say 100kb and most wouldn't notice.

At the max 80 post per thread thats 8mb per page. *yawn* big deal.

And in reality, nobody needs 100kb, it just stops people putting stupily large ones in there.

Given that some don't even have signatures your average page would only be 1 or 2 meg i'd reckon.

Nobody is saying we want 300 pixels high. Just how about 80 pixels high and 450 wide ??

Thing is i browse these forums on my mobile data allowance using tethering on my ipad. Thats 1gb for a whole month

I just turn the signatures off. Problem solved.

Me too. Spoiler tags and slightly bigger sigs would be great. I like seeing who's playing what in their xbox/ps3 sigs and it's a shame that nobody really makes them the exact size that ocUK dictates - which speaks volumes, really. It's such an antiquated sig rule that nobody makes them this size anymore.

young 'uns today. Net etiquette is lost these days. Even if I have a gigbit fibre connection, I don't want to be downloading 8MB or more, PER PAGE, from crappy slow servers for what amounts to a few KB of actual content (the text)

If you're that anal on a gigabit connection then turn them off.
