Hi,
I'm going to Plymouth university this september and I'm getting a house in plymouth with a few of my mates for the upcoming year. Basically I want to know what are the nicer areas to look for?

I've noticed there are a few houses around Mutley but I have been warned off this. Is Mutley a bad area?

Would central Plymouth be a better idea?

Any help would be excellent, I know there are a few Plymouth Uni students on here!

Excellent, thanks for your help everyone.

I'm going to be studying 'Computer Systems & Networks' starting in September.

I have had a look at Alexandra Works in Mutley and to be honest it didn't look too bad at all, just a little expensive as the £250 deposit, first rent installment and utility charge have to be paid very soon. Also the utility charge is £250 which I thought was quite high?

If I decide to go in halls would you recommend a standard or en suite room? The en suite are around £90 a week, which isn't a problem, but is it worth it?

I will taking my car with me becuase I definately want the ability to get around! I was informed that Plymouth don't provide you with parking at the uni, so are there plenty of places to park? I presume that just on the side of the road will be ok. I can't see anyone stealing my car to be honest there's plenty better things to steal! lol.

Ah, a very good point for me to mention which also makes me lucky, is that my girlfriend and a couple of her mates are going to have a place in Plymouth, and so dinners round there most nights for me :D

Can't wait :D

Thanks for the advice mate. I have got myself a job for now and will have plenty of cash put by, and I'm very good with my finances so will budget very carefully.

I'm not a massive drinker which is good 'cos i think that's where a lot of student funds take a beating! lol.

No but seriously, what would you consider the top 3 expenses other than rent?

Cheers

P.S How difficult is the Computer Systems and Networks course? Is it enjoyable?

I graduated 5 years ago and even back then course being offered to freshers was far different to the course I was on. So I can't really comment on what it's like now. I enjoyed it though and it's got me where I am today, working in New York as a System Engineer on projects totalling about £500m :)

And you enjoy your job i'm guessing!? It really interests me and I'm very much looking forward to furthering my knowledge. Would you consider it worth specialising in one particular area? For example, network security?

I'm looking at the documentation for Alexandra Works. It clearly states here that there is a one of utility charge of £250 which is to be paid with the first installment of rent.

I've just spoke to my girlfriend and she says that she's phoned them up and that there is in fact, no utility charge?

Does anyone know anything about this as I presume that charges would be the same accross all of the UNITE properties?

Ah no it's ok I've spoken to UNITE and it's been sorted out.

Turns out they print the same form for every one of their buildling throughout the country and the utlity charge only applies to some of them.

So I only need to pay my security deposit.

Out of interest how much was the first installment of rent and how are you paying, 3 or 8 installments?

Cheers

Sounds good. The machines up to date? The machines in my sixth form are awful stone age things that don't work most of the time. I will be using my laptop I'm guessing I'm not allowed to plug into the uni network whilst in class e.t.c.?

I have once mate yeh, but it was a while ago and I can't remember too much.

I can understand people becoming distracted from their work by their laptops, but I've set a new rule to be implemented as of 01/09/06 and that is simply:

NO GAMES ALLOWED!

I should have bought a laptop that was incable of playing any games :p

Wireless access sounds like a large bonus, does this allow you onto the Uni's intranet and internet access or is it just internal?
