Pokemon X and Y - 3DS - Oct 2013

Just bought X, my first Pokemon game ever! About an hour in now and enjoying it, although unsure exactly what I'm doing at times though :)

Am I too late to the game series? Should I stop now on X, and start on an earlier game to get more understanding of the mechanics of the game?

I'd say you'd just be in the same position as you are now but in slightly more clunky games from an older gen.

If you enjoy it or would rather play an older game first go for it.

Yeah just stick with this one :)

Quick reminder to everyone to add everyones friend codes on the first page too

I'll add everyone on the first page today, get some friend safaris done, if anyone does mine can you tell me who my pokemon are. TY.

I hope this isn't hijacking the thread, but I just bought a DSi XL and was wondering what Pokemon game I should start with?

What are your suggestions?

Thanks

Thanks, in hindsight I should have saved for a 3DS.

My thinking was that I'd see if I liked it and then upgrade at a later time. Will see what happens :)

Im playing White atm, as I want to finish it before starting X or Y.
Tbh are Black. Black 2 and White 2 much different? I was told its more of the same just new stories etc?

Which should I start first from X and Y btw?

I'm about 5 gyms into black 2 at the moment, it seems a lot harder to level pokemon than in x/y.

I'm also finding that black 2 seems to have more character than Y, Y seems a bit uninspired. Looking forward to getting all of the legendaries too, as there are so many more to get in Black 2 than X/Y.

*ninja throwing star*

I'm thinking of starting HG again but there are some things I'm not sure about.

It'll be a fresh game as I wiped ages ago but didn't really get round to playing it again.

I'll be choosing Cyndaquil as my starter pokemon but I'm not sure if i'll actually play through it with him.

I was thinking about getting a Pidgey and playing mainly with him.

If I did play through with Cyndaquil and evolved him I don't know much about breeding but I don't think it would be the same as a standard Cyndaquil that you would get when choosing from the 3 starter pokemon. Wouldn't the hatched version be all different with moves etc.?

Last timed I played I just went through with Cyndaquil on his own and ended up with him being level 60+ by the time I got to the elite four.

I'm not sure if Pidgey would be able to handle that on his own.

Although when I used my Cyndaquil I didn't have the right moves to take down the dragon pokemon as I didn't have Swift and I swapped another good move out for Eruption. I think it's called Eruption. I'm not sure but I know it only had 5 PP.

I'm not sure why I chose 1 pokemon to go through the game with but it seemed like a lot of work levelling more than 1 pokemon having to keep going into wild battles to level them up which would be quite slow.

Does anyone know any good ways of starting out or any tips on how to get a good team from scratch up to the elite four?

How many Pokemon can you have in X and Y? as in the total Pokedex?

Can you literally transfer every single Gen type movie to X and Y using various different trading ways until you work all the way up to Pokemon X Y?

Possible stupid alert....

How do I swap my main six "usable" pokemon with others that I've collected? Can't for the life of me figure it out lol

@jive-zonbie id try and have at least 2-3 main pokemon you use and level up together. I usually have a fire and water type and a flying pokemon in my top 3. Then a few useful or personal faves in the team. This way you can carry on if you get stonewalled against a gym leader or between get to the gym leader battles.

@JamesG87 - effectively any pokemon you can catch in any gen 2 gold/silver can be chain traded up to xy with enough ds's and time and patience. Maybe 1 poke is unteadeeable to xy but I can't remember what or why.

@ Dyson go to a poke centre where you can heal pokes. Go to the pc at the side and load the first or second choice and select deposit or withdraw or organise pokes to move them between the boxes in the PC and your team.

You need to keep a good few pokemon levelled up to make sure you don't get destroyed by a certain trainer or battle that you're weak to.

Personally I like to have an electric and a psychic pokemon as my main, electric is not weak to much and psychic pokemon although often a bit frail and Weak to a stray bite they are powerful and many of them have a recover move to heal up. I also enjoyed having a haunter/ mega gengar in my team this time around there are some moves that will not hit them and shadow ball is generally quite effective.

I found a great app for android too which helps you learn what type of pokemon and moves to use against which pokemon:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ov3rk1ll.pokedroiddex

You just type in the name of the pokemon and it tells you what is good to use against it.

I have a propensity to raise my Pokémon as they come, paying little attention to abilities, natures etc. I'm not a competitive battler, and I find the whole idea much less monotonous. My Pokémon Y team currently consists of:

Frogadier
Pikachu
Kirlia
Charmeleon
Honedge
Lucario

It seems to be a solid team with some good coverage, but I was toying with the idea of replacing Pikachu with a Dragon type. (Possibly Gible for the purpose of having a Garchomp eventually.)

Edit: Alternatively, I could evolve Pikachu into Raichu after learning Thunderbolt at 29. (I appreciate Raichu won't learn any moves afterwards, but I can supplement him with TMs.)

I enjoyed using honedge, it will evolve into doublade and you can use a stone to evolve it into aegislash which is one of my favourites.

On another note, if you register a 3DS console and one of a few games you can get Pokemon X or Y for free on the nintendo club website.

I have registered my console but my Mario land doesn't have a code with it :(

With the addition of fairy type and the mass availability of ice moves out there dragons don't fare fantastically. A poison type of half type van be useful. Nidoking or venusaur etc cab be useful.

I thought this offer was just available to people in North America?
