Ignorance is no excuse sadly, the chances are you would get away for it the entire duration you had the bike as me and many of the people I know did, the problem is if you get in a serious accident / one where you cant ride away on a restricted license it will be inspected and when its found to not be, all your cover will be invalid and you are also riding not in accordance to your licence.... got to ask yourself whether its worth the risk

There's no excuse there. All that certificate proves is that is was installed and certified on that date.
