Police set to step up hacking of home PCs

I think you know well that there is a decent amount of case law on this - so CONSIDERABLY more than once every two decades.

I'm not a lawyer and have never studied law so no I don't know the number of cases on this.

What is even more disturbing than this new law however is this case http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/blogger-wrote-of-murdering-girls-aloud-949711.html where someone is being prosecuted for writing a story, Hitler would be proud I'm sure. Will be interesting to see if the jury nullify this.

Is there software that can stop a hack or is it impossible to stop someone if they want it bad enough?

There isn't one software package to stop hacking. Security should always have a multilayered approach. However, you can stop most people if you spend enough time on it, but no system is 100% secure.

WPA-AES Wireless network with MAC Filtering, and windows firewall on my PC will do me.

Can't be bothered with anything that will interfere with my actual PC like anti-virus or a seperate firewall program. What I've got will stop almost anyone already.

What do you define as total protection then? A sandbox gives you full protection against viruses, scripts, spyware or anything else that a browser can do to damage your system.
Total would imply that you think you are 100% secure and that nobody could breach your system. That is a false assumption as the weak link will always be the software you are using.

Is that not what IE7 is as standard on Vista?

Yes, the downside however is that it's IE7. :p Seriously though I think there were some security flaws with the implementation of protected mode, I wouldn't want to trust ms software with their past history.
