Police should commute in uniform

From friends in London, I gather that the fare-dodging Police are still allowed through the barriers on London Underground on production of their identification - it would be a nice idea if this were ONLY to apply if they were in uniform :)

You really are one bitter individual.

I'm a cop and I would hate this, not to mention the fact its dangerous. I don't want my whole neighbourhood knowing what I do for a living. May as well just walk about with a big target on your back, the local neds would have my car keyed and slashed to pieces in no time.

On top of all the points raised above, another consideration is how the officer gets to work. What if the officer cycles to work? He/she can't be expected to cycle in uniform.

Stupid idea. Won't happen.

I think its a bad idea. Many reasons already stated.

Ditto.

Basically they want to have "more uniforms" on the street without
A: Paying them
B: Equipping them
C: Giving them any support
AND
D: Whilst at the same time cutting back on the pay, working conditions and support whilst they are "at work".

I can see this working wonderfully and being so popular if they tried to introduce it...

I can see the Daily Mail headlines now
"Copper refuses to help in robbery" the first time one of the officers heading into work in his uniform, refuses to assist in an armed mugging because he doesn't have any protective gear, restraints, ability to call for assistance or support.

We already see the DM going after people for "not doing their jobs" or "standing by whilst boy drowns", usually followed by the idiots who don't understand that one of the main things in any life threatening event is that you generally don't do something that is likely to raise the casualty count with no benefit...

So this is an idea which is most likely not to work in big cities, but would only serve any purpose in big cities.
Where is the assumption that all police officers commute by public transport from? Or that they always have a direct commute to and from work?
Is there a particularly high level of crime on public transport that it would counteract?

Would they still be allowed to listen to their mp3 players or read a book on the commute to work? Wouldn't look very professional for a uniformed officer to be doing that. :p

Sounds like a terrible idea for many reasons.

Or go to the gym, or drop their kids off at school, or go for a drink after, or stop for a maccy d's breakfast (ok, they do that while on duty anyway)

Poor idea IMHO, a Police officer is entitled to his/her home life privacy just the same as the rest of society.

Thank you. At least someone gets it.

It is an idea that would have worked in the Dixon days and may work in rural areas but it is not compatible with people who live in more urban areas.

If you want cops in uniform commuting then they have to be able to defend themselves, others and have the tools to do it. Will the government authorise CS or other sec 5 firearms being carried during the commute ? No.

what a retarded idea, basically they want them to police for free off duty while they commute, this is just asking to get stabbed on the tube through brixton.

I can't see them letting police take home their batons etc, so great get stabbed with no defence.

Not to mention storage of CS/Capta.

Then what about radios, they need to be stored securely too.

This idea will not go anywhere.

Are officers walking to work encountering a lot of crime that they aren't interested in?
