I'm a 5 or 6 kind of guy ideally.
In regards to which end to peel from, I was always a stem peeler until my wife told me that it's easier from the other end. I now give it a quick pinch and peel from the non stem end now.

so by normal nana logic it's safe to eat, however the look and feel of the actual nana is off putting so I'm conflicted on whether to bin it or eat it
