I played Red Alert 2 and its various expansions to death and thought it was the best game for a while, mostly because of the single player campaign and the easy multi-player capabilities over LAN (Very easy and simplistic map generator for example).

However, Generals and Zero Hour are my favourite.

One of the main reasons for this is because they simplified a lot of the mechanics and units. There wasn't many "uber" units and the amount of strategies you could still employ with the reduced unit types is what makes it so great. Each unit has its own unique advantage and disadvantage, so no one could be determined the best outright.
Another reason could be because of the "Generals" gameplay, each had it's own special units.

Anything after Generals it quite simply **** and why they changed the franchise so much, I'll never know!

Could C&C 3 be called underrated?

Yeah, slightly going against my above post but I really think that game should have rated more highly. It was a good effort I think, I don't know how they came from that to make that POS RA 3 though.

I liked all of them up to and including C&C3 (except Tiberian Sun). RA3 has a fun coop campaign, but other than that it really does suck :(

We won't even go into C&C4....

With what RA3 and C&C4 have been like though I don't hold much hope for Generals 2.

Although I played the original Red Alert when it came out and it was a very good game, I still prefer Red Alert 2. As another person has said, i didnt really like what the add on brought to the table and prefer vanilla. Generals was also very good though.

Does anyone else think the campaign modes lost their shine after RA2? I was never compelled to play them through again when I completed them.

Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars
First time i played a C&C game, had the lovely Grace Park looking mighty hot and the gameplay was decent.

Command and Conquer 1 is my favourite.
It is not the best one (Red Alert is better) but this is the first in the series and this is the one that made me think wow.
Other good ones are Red Alert 1, 2.

I don't like the newer ones much. I don't like Generals but that is only due to me not playing it when it came out as my PC was not good enough, so it doesn't give the nostalgia effect.
Renegade was a POS the day it came out and needs to be forgotten ASAP.

C&C Renegade was the best game, used to play that so much, so much fun, still have it installed and update it with the latest scripts and mods.

Still has a active gaming community for it.

This thread is poor for not having the orig on the list. After playing Dune 2 for a long time, the first command and conquer introduced a few nice missing features like simplified multi unit control. Made a big difference. All the rest and simple additions to the formula set out on the first.

Isnt that what tiberium dawn refers to?

The first game is first in the list, it was called Tiberian Dawn which gets my vote as the best C&C.

I keep looking at C&C 4 thinking "hmm, that looks interesting", "maybe it was unfairly slated for being original"...

Is it a good game if taken on its own terms and if it were not named C&C? I might just buy it incase I happen to think its a amazing game. Which is probably unlikely but I have liked some apparently awful games in the past :D.

Shame there is no demo, which worries me a bit. Metacritic gives it 64...hmm ok. The user reviews are pretty much all uniformly terrible though. Fanboys? Hmm.

Is the game popular online, does anyone know? If its not popular then I definetely won't bother.
