I played Red Alert 2 and its various expansions to death and thought it was the best game for a while, mostly because of the single player campaign and the easy multi-player capabilities over LAN (Very easy and simplistic map generator for example).
However, Generals and Zero Hour are my favourite.
One of the main reasons for this is because they simplified a lot of the mechanics and units. There wasn't many "uber" units and the amount of strategies you could still employ with the reduced unit types is what makes it so great. Each unit has its own unique advantage and disadvantage, so no one could be determined the best outright.
Another reason could be because of the "Generals" gameplay, each had it's own special units.
Anything after Generals it quite simply **** and why they changed the franchise so much, I'll never know!
