Yes me too. Another one deciding at an early age to be 'cool and different'.
I don't cross sevens though, but I'm always tempted to cross 'Z's.
I would never cross a zero unless it was in the company of letter 'O's and there was danger of confusion. Doing it as a rule would be, like, geeky.

Yes, a product of writing it quickly and ensuring it's not confused with a 1. From maths exams, it meant they looked very different from each other.

I cross my sevens. I only cross a 0 if I'm writing it in addition to letters (like a WPA/WEP code or something).

I cross my sevens and my Zs. I do a lot of maths in my degree, though, and about a year or two ago I realized that crossing my Zs made it much, much easier to distinguish them from my twos.

Maths causes all sorts of problems for handwriting though; you need to be able to write k, K, and κ (kappa) to be distinguishable, as well as z, Z, and 2 (as mentioned). Not to mention u, v and ν (nu) – thankfully υ (upsilon) isn't used.

I kid, but what I find weird is when people write 'Z's like the defunct letter yogh. Like this. People and their crazy attempts at reinventing letters.

I was taught this at school in 1995 and we were told it was part of the handwriting curriculum.

Apparently when you used to write out code and give it to someone to put on a punch card you'd strike the zero so they could tell the difference between 0 and O.

Did you do CS? I do physics and maths and none of my lecturers have ever done that.

Yup I do! I used to do it before but now I live over here it helps the Johnny foreigners understand as they write their 1s just like an uncrossed 7 (i.e. with a long bit on top).

but yeah, cross my sevens, just makes them easier to read.
never cross my zero's though but then i never mix them with letters usually.
sometimes cross my zeds if they are in a bunch of numbers.

I always do it to avoid confusion with other letters in equations. I also make sure to do a squiggly s, cross 'Z's and write a complete '1' instead of just a straight line.
