Thanks for all your votes and replies! Our gut feeling was to go for the ford fiesta and it looks like 92% of you agree!

Now for the second part, should we buy privately or through a used car dealership? Can anyone offer some advice? We've heard that it will be cheaper privately but so much can go wrong... is it worth paying more and using the dealership?

I probably worded that wrong it is very unwilling to rev no point in going past 4000rpm it just doesn't pull its a gutless thing.

My wifes 3 cylinder 1.2 that you find in the polo/fabia/ibiza - now that's an engine that really doesn't do anything more if you rev it past 4000rpm. All of the zetec/duratec fiestas I have driven on the other hand have continued to pull all the way up the rev range and were were happy doing so.
The 1.4 duratec is still only a ~96bhp motor at the end of the day so it's not going to set the world alight, but the power delivery isn't as you described in any I have driven.

With your price range on such a car, i would go private. infact i would go private on any car unless it was steal from a dealer.

Look for a 1.25. Long MOT, good service history along with paper work and most importantly... No chav owners

Thinking about it, if I had a straight choice between a Corsa and a Perodua Kelisa, I'd want to at least give the Kelisa at test drive...

(edited for worse Perodua model)
