last time I drove an auto, its was in a merc A class and had this rubbish auto box, but you had to change gear like a manual, but without depressing the clutch as it didnt have a clutch pedal

probably the worst car I have driven in my life!! Then I forgot about not having a clutch and did a double footed brake infront of uni.....was embarassing to say the least.

semi auto box, you prolly didnt realise there was an option to put it in fully auto mode.

My current and last cars are autos...

I dont like autos really, but they have a place. Some big barges are just made for auto, whereas some cars are killed by having them.

I am having a manual next though. I need to have a clutch pedal again!!!

240 bhp forester auto - Daily Driver

200 bhp bike engined 7 6 speed sequential manual - Enthusiastic driver

Best of both worlds...

Wouldnt wanna use the 7 as a daily driver, wouldnt wanna use the Scoob on a track.. although its damn fast...

:D

I dont thik he meant to offend, auto's have their place, but for normal people trying to enjoy driving, Manuel is the only way!

Yeah coz driving in heavy traffic is real enjoyable with a manual...

;)

Most people who claim driving an auto is not enjoyable havent driven a modern auto at any sort of speed...

My Accord 2.4 exec auto wasnt as quick as the manual but was no less enjoyable... My scoob Forester S/Tb JDM spec is good straight line but a little too heavy for enthusiastic driving round corners, but thats not because its an auto, its coz its a great lardy SUV..

Left foot braking, sequential shift, whats not to enjoy...

Remove the blinkers and you will be surprised...

If you are looking for BEST performance to enhance your manhood, or best fuel economy, then yes go for the manual...

90% of the time gearchanging is a wasted exercise you dont have to perform, the other 10% the sequential shift gives you the fun...

PS. The Citroen DS was a prime example of a semi auto that was as fast as an equivalent manual... loved that car..

:D

And for those people like my first wife that got thrown off a horse and destroyed her left kneecap so she could not physically drive a stickshift?

Or for those people like my mother that was afflicted with rheumatoid arthritis in her ankles and could not physically drive a stickshift nor a car without PAB and PAS? And yet she was still driving herself to work up until 3 weeks before cancer claimed her life?

Personally I find your comment a little offensive, but that's just me. I have quite a few opinions about cars and thier drivers (especially UK ones), but I think I'll just keep them to myself at this point in time.......
And for myself who lost the use of my legs when I broke my back..Yeah, nice, I'd be stuck at home without my Automatic.

Manual, since I sold the X-Type.

I wouldn't discount another auto though.

My next car in a couple of months may well be an auto instead of a 6 speed manual.

Auto Toyota Prius, that's about as enjoyable to drive as stuffing pudding in your ears.

how is it classed for insurance and license?
do they class it as auto so its covered under an auto license?
if the car has no clutch pedal you can drive it with an auto licence.

Auto for me. I'm a lazy driver at heart.

Couple the auto with my disctroinc radar assisted cruise control and neither foot needs to do anything on motorway journeys these days.

While you may scoff at this, I'm sure we've all experienced the old "itchy right foot while driving". For me it is not a problem as I can scratch away to my heart's content as long as I keep my eyes on the road :D
out of interest, what does the disctronic do when a car ahead slows down a lot more than is possible for it to slow down without applying the breaks,
is it able to apply breaks?

I drive a manual, and in the past I would have sat here and typed alsorts of obscene comments about autos, but I am starting to realise that automatics do have their place.

Manual for the win though. :p

Currently an auto in my daily driver. No bias for or against either. I prefer autos for the daily commute. Prefer manuals for the back road bash.

No, there isn't an option to do that...

On the old A-Class, you could have either a normal manual gearbox with a clutch pedal, a semi-auto which has no clutch pedal but a standard gear lever like the full manual or a full automatic (with tiptronic).

The semi-auto was a stupid gimmic and as far as I know, very few were actually sold. Most of them that I've seen have been dealer owned service loan cars (probably because they couldn't shift them to punters :p )

Our house is a mix. 3 speed auto, 4 speed auto OD, 5 speed auto, 4 speed manual OD, 4 speed manual.

I drive both an auto and a manual, so have the best of both worlds :D I find the auto infinitely more relaxing to drive, probably because the box and engine are well matched and shift excellently.

The manual is more 'fun' though. Auto is being sold atm :(

No, there was definitely no fully auto mode, as I checked with the garage when I got back as well as reading the manual.
