so you'd be happy with people on minimum wage (as the person who suggested this apparently is) paying more in taxes to support other people who have six figures worth of assets and could afford to pay for the cost of their care themselves?

this just gets funnier - people are coming up with rather odd ways to justify their opposition to this... partly simply because it was the Tories proposing it rather than Labour

No, I was responding to the poster who said £8 a month wouldnt do anything. Just pointing out it would raise 3 times more than the house selling idea. Perhaps the government should do both?

Anyway, after it was all carefully studied, the report's recommendation into the social care issue was insurance cover, perhaps that was £8 a month needed?

And I also pointed out that people will oppose an idea/approve of an idea purely based on which party proposed it whereas I believe ideas should be judged on their merit.

Daily Mail commentards have gone into complete meltdown over the social care plans, despite Dacre's spin. I think May-bot has misjudged how willing people are to swallow her 'tough but fair' nonsense.

Will he win though?

No but the way May is going she might not end up with any bigger of a majority than she had before which would be a pretty crushing defeat really considering her starting point and the reasons she wanted an election and her whole platform which seems to be based on "vote for her" rather than the party.

I think people are a bit sick of being on the receiving end of "tough".

doesn't matter - she'll still win the election and any future labour government post Brexit isn't likely to reverse a policy targeting wealth people to pay for social care

the Daily Fail comments are reflective of the fact that people in general hate giving the government more money, hate paying taxes... to the point where some people in this thread have come up with ridiculous suggestions like blowing 350k to save 50k etc..

Yep works for me. :) Yet bizarrely i am in favour of them increasing the income tax rate rather than keep dropping it. I would rather have more money in the kitty to spend. Go figure.

Yes how is that not fair? I'm on minimum wage and the chances of owning my own property are slim, why should home owners foot my bill? surely true fairness is everyone contributes, why should people be penalised for working hard and buying their own home?

Dedicated NHS/care tax, everyone has to pay.

Yep I would agree with that as well.

Not at all.

Compared to others of her generation, probably in the bottom 20%.

Compared to generations that came after her, probably in the bottom 40%.

That's part of the problem tho, isn't it... the market as it stands is increasingly screwing succeeding generations, to the point of being unsustainable. Still waiting for the bubble to burst, or the social unrest to come.

no shes in the top 50% from the house alone, not including pension, savings etc.
what level of assets do you think somone needs to have before they should pay for their own care?

it is a bit ironic you claim to want wealth distribution but not when it applies to your own relatives

It's not like he/his mum actually has wealth though is it really?

On another topic the £2,000 per annum 'skills charge' and the £1,000 per annum 'international health surcharge' for individuals really does suck.

I imagine post Brexit it will include EU people too.

they won't specifically, they'll only foot their own bill if they have assets worth > 100k

with that logic why not re-introduce the poll tax to fund local authorities while we're at it... and a flat tax for income too

this is getting hilarious - people essentially using right wing objections to a Tory policy

It's not like he/his mum actually has wealth though is it really?

yeah I mean 250k is only a low six figure amount after all??????

I suppose it depends how you define fairness... systemic fairness or fairness of individual policies.

Any policy which leads or could be predicted to lead to a concentration of wealth, directly or indirectly, would be unfair, no matter how well intention ed. Forcing families to sell their homes, when the likelihood is these homes will be added to BTL portfolios, can only be classed as unfair.

If you look *only* at this individual policy, it could be argued to be fair... I will concede that.

But if the knock-on effects are that home ownership goes down, and rental increases - without putting checks and balances into the rental market - then our society may become less fair overall, and this policy could contribute.

I guess what I'm saying is you always have to look at the big picture. Fundamentally our broken housing market is making otherwise good ideas into bad ideas.

Why does he feel so entitled to his Mum's wealth anyway?

I hope she leaves it all to charity.
Aren't you nice chap.

It sure does buy a lot of sweets, I'll grant you that.

But having £250k and no house means you need to buy a house ASAP. Which will cost you about... you guessed it £250k.

It is one house, and that's all it is. Having £250k and no house would be problematic. Nobody wants to live in their car.

Again, you are coming at this purely from a "that's a 6-figure sum!" angle, whereas I'm saying "it's one house, which everybody needs to live".

e: I'm also asserting that houses are stupidly overpriced, and prices need to fall considerably. At which point my single house becomes what, £150k? £100k? And I'd welcome that. I don't want to be rich. I just want a home, and not to be a slave to a BTL landlord, working 100h weeks to pay the rent.
