These are a bit complicated but a couple of questions.

If the opponent fouls by missing one of there balls, and then proceeds to snooker you by fluke. What is the official line. Do I get a freeball because if I try and hit one of my balls i could miss and give a foul/2 shots away.

2, Opponent fouls, which leaves me two shoots. I pot my remaining ball which leaves me on the black. Do I still retain my two shots or does it revert to one because I am on the black?

Last time I looked, BAPTO rules had a free shot followed by a visit for a foul, so in case 1 you're free to hit any ball, including the black (and, except for the black, pot it), before continuing with a visit.

In case 2, your free shot was taken by potting your last ball, so your visit commences with the black shot, so you get just the one shot.

I doubt you'll get any kind of consensus as people play to different rules. For the rules I usually play I'd say the following:

First situation: Any foul automatically gives you both a free ball and the option to place the cue ball anywhere behind the baulk line and play from there.

Second situation: I'm not entirely sure about this one. I usually play 2 shots on the black unless the black is the only ball remaining so this situation doesn't occur that frequently. When I does I usually try and get the black down in one to avoid any argument!!

1. It's only a snooker if there is no possible path to your object ball, i.e off a cushion or two, BUT, because he fouled you can replace the ball in the D. This is assuming you're playing UK 8-ball.

edit: to clarify the snooker point, if you end up in a clutch of your opponents balls where it's impossible to hit your ball, it's a re-rack.

2. You have 1 shot, this would be the case no matter which ball you were on as 2 shots no longer 'carry'.

For the league i play, rules as updated about 2 years ago

1. Its a foul snooker, you can move the white as if it was potted.

2. You still have 2 shoots.

so many people play so many different rules, it really depends on wether your playing anything official or not.
ive always found that if im playing someone in an area outside of my own, then i ask what rules are played and generally find that people who play me in my area (who i havent played before) ask what rules i play by.

also, it depends on wether you have to pay to release the balls (pub table etc), which would mean no re rack due to cost

what we play
1 - free ball
2 - still 2 shots

I know people who change the rules every game (to suit themselves obviously).

The rules I play.

1a) If there is a D then you can shoot in any direction out of the D when replacing the ball

1b) If there is no D then you can place the ball anywhere behind the line, but the ball must cross the line before it stops moving.

2) A foul will result in 2 shots. You can respot the ball and you can take a free ball, you do not have to let the other player know you are doing either or both.

3) If you can make a jump shot without marking (or tearing) the cloth then fair enough (technically jump shots are illegal)

4) If you have 2 shots then clear up the table and are left on the black you can carry them on. - I situations where there have been disputes I have claimed a freeball to better my position, retaining my second shot.

5) All rules are discussed upfront.

You seem to have interpreted the rule wrongly on this one. You get your free visit, and then once that "visit" is completed, you continue with your normal visit.

What I don't like, is when the opponent has say, 1 colour left and I'm on the black... they foul on their shot leaving me without a pot on, the ball reasonably safe... if we play by some of my friend's rules where you never get two shots on the black, they have gained an advantage by fouling (of course, a deliberate foul results in loss of the frame) which should never happen.

Personally, I prefer 9-ball where there's no "two shots" malarky but you can move the cue ball to any position on the table.

I thought that was what I said?

You get a free shot, then, as long as you havent fouled on that shot, you get a visit, as though you'd just arrived at the table.

So if you have one ball left, then you can use that free shot to pot the last of your colours, and then your 'visit' starts as normal - i,e you have one shot on the black.

If your opponment fouls when you're down to the black then again, you have a free shot and a visit, so effectively you have 2 shots on the black.

i was going to mention that in my post, some people can be very creative when playing a shot, fouling but not specifically making it look like they meant to, while leaving you in a really crap position :/

Note that the "Official" rules posted earlier make no mention of any "1 shot on the black" rule anyway.

Is the BAPTO the official standard? The rules played in my local league are tweaked every year like the rules followed by the PBBBA.

cant say that i have ever played 2 full shots on the black. 1 shot but its a free table, if you pot you carry on, if you dont pot then its your opponents visit

Thats the great thing about 'official' rules - there are so many sets you can choose the one you want.

Every league ive ever played in was along BAPTO rules, but I've not played in a league for about 5 years now....

9-ball is a much better game with more tactics and simpler rules.

I'd agree with your second comment but there's no way it has more tactics than 8 ball especially if your playing world rules.

One mistake at 9-ball and it's game over. It's incredibly tactical... although saying that, almost any ball can be potted from any position on the table.
