My cat jess has a passion for killing things, which often means we find dead "presents" around the house and occasionally the odd live one... Well today i found her running around with a sparrow in her mouth that was still alive! So i chased her off it and put it in a box next to an open window in my bedroom hoping that it just needed a chill out and all would be fine. Well an hour later i found it leaning on its head with its arse in the air, unfortunatly still alive. At this point i thought there was nothing more i could do and went to put it at the bottom of the garden. When i put it down it fell over straight away onto its side, so i decided it was better off not being here....

It upsets me to have to do that but it looked like it was suffering really badly and i doubt it would have survived anyway.

Ohh well RIP Mr/Mrs sparrow.....

Without sounding morbid, how did you kill it?

My mate once stamped on it to put one out of its misery as his cat got to it and it was in a bad way. But I'd just projectile vomit everywhere at the feeling of it under my foot.

And well done for not making it suffer

You did the best thing, it sounds like it was going to die. I remember doing the same thing before and trying to save a small slightly mauled bir - we put in a box but it just pooed itself from fear a few times before dying. :(

I hit it on the head with a piece of metal, it was clean and it didnt twitch at all afterwards, which was nice really because it let me know it was totally instant....

And now my dog has been arrested for brawling with a staffy.........:D

My cat recently chased a scared to deatn pigeon in our house and was about to finish it off. It looked like it was in a bad way and my mum felt so sorry for it she decided to look after it for the next 2 months. She fed it and even made a make shift bird house out of our shed. We released it about 2 weeks ago and flew out with no problems. My cats forever killing things, his record so far has been 3 birds in 1 day.

My dad told me how he found 2 of our cats playing with a small bird in the garden, but he was late for work and didn't have time to look after it so put a laundry basket over it til he could come back about an hour later.

When he got home he found the bird had been ripped to shreds by the cats clawing it through the slits of the laundry basket. :o

They really are evil creatures when they want to be.

I have a metal mallet to dispatch things my cat brings back. Just put them in a little bag on the floor and give it a wack. Very clean way of doing it and much kinder than letting the cat carry on, they can make animals last for hours playing with them. That is all providing I'm home when they get something otherwise its either feathers all over the place or mouse guts left by the food bowl.

no matter how horrible the story, adding that line in it would probably make it a lot more light-hearted. it also made me chuckle.

guess you did the right thing. my cat used to do that when she was younger. shes 14 (Human years) now and mostly sleeps, eats and yowls for more food
