Poor performance 7990

Thanks for the comments chaps, I've just sent back my 3770 for a refund and ordered a 3770k it's arriving tomorrow and I ll give it a go at overclocking it.

Years ago I stopped buying games on release because there is always something wrong that needs fixing.
So I buy the games I want 3-4 months after release because then they're usually patched up and there are new drivers out...and some times the game even got cheaper.
Following this 'schedule' I never had problem... If I once in a while happen to buy a game on release I'm well aware I shouldn't expect it to run flawlessly...

As far as my card is concerned do you think I should stick with the 7990? I mentioned previously about getting a titan but I'm not sure if there would be any notable performance increases... I've read some negative things about at drivers too that worries me..

As long as you are running 13.8 of the drivers or later you should be fine as long as you are not running a multi-screen setup for gaming.

If the 7990 was still £825 I would swap it for a Titan, at £525 its a steal I would not swap it for a Titan, with the assumption that you are using a single screen for gaming.

They will fix the drivers for smooth multi-screen gaming, looks like it will be within the next driver release in 6-8 weeks time.

I will stick with it i think.

So I've swapped out the 3770 for the k version but i cant seem to adjust any frequency settings in the bios.... it shows as the k version in the bios but everything is set to auto and doesnt allow me to change anything i.e hit enter on the desired field and nothing... no drop down box on the cpu ratio etc.... Do i need to do anything to the bios?

You have to use the arrow keys mate select the field you want hit enter then and use either arrow keys and or plus and minus keys.
make sure if its your first time OCing to read a few guides wazza helped me a lot and get the correct monitoring tools like a few set out below :) good luck on your over clocking journey :)

PRIME 95

AND I USE CORE TEMP TO GET A SECOND GOOD TEMP READING

This thread...

Yes your 3770 will be holding the performance back on HD7990 but it won't be the reason you're experiencing poor performance. Sure it can't stretch it's legs completely but it's more than powerful enough in that setup to give you great performance. *EDIT* I see you're getting a 3770k, definitely a good move as you will want that option to overclock to be honest.

I am currently running at stock speeds currently on my 3770k and my performance is fantastic with my HD7990 in tow. If you look around the forums of many sites ROME 2 is plagued with issues and as has been stated on the thread it uses 2 cores in places, not really efficient use of your available power, but that's software based not down to your gpu+cpu combo.

I'd be fairly confident that in any other game you throw at the system it will perform well.

Just ensure you've done the necessary things such as activating Crossfire X for all games through the Catalyst Control Panel as it is possible you haven't done this, experienced it myself when installing a new driver it defaults to not selecting this option.

Also disable ULPS (right name) in MSI Afterburner or the equivalent.

Should be good to go.

i've ever only had to that when running 2 cards + oc the cards.

running a dual gpu single card i haven't needed to do that even when OCing

You should try it Gareth as it still boosts the performance of the card even although it's dual GPU ;) Overclocking or not, there are some benchies I done myself and from others on the HD7990 thread.

just thought i'd let you chaps know i swapped out the 3770 for the k and im now running a stable oc at 4.5ghz :D

Something i have noticed with my 7990 though, during 3d applications or games it makes a buzzing noise the noise stops when alt tabbed to desktop or upon quitting the game, I ve heard of coil squeal do you think this could be related?
