i remember a long long time ago (at least 14 years)....this m8 of mine used to switch price labels on some stuff in stores and he was able to get the item for the cheaper label price (regardless of what the scanned price comes up as)

I can't believe how many people think that the store has to honour any prices in situations like this. This is basic consumer/contract law, it should be taught in school.

This is a common comment made by all people who have no idea what they're talking about.

I used to work in Harrods and sometimes items would be priced wrongly by mistake. We'd get people coming up to the customer services desk and saying "but you HAVE to sell it at this price, it's the law!"

It's not the law. The law actually says that if an item is priced wrongly the store has the option to withdraw if from sale for 24 hours and reprice it. The law isn't always inflexible and uncompromising - in some cases it does make allowances for human error.

yup, this is exactly right. i loove the peeps who say you have to sell it coz it said that price. what, u would walk into a car showroom, swop the prices and get it at that price...yea right :rolleyes:
 
Hey, I used to believe that, and I worked at Tesco for 2 years before I did a module of Law at uni :P

I'm saying if bought online the shop don't have to honour it, but if thats the store price then people will have bought them and received goods already :)
 
What I was saying is that it makes no difference.

Assuming they still spotted the fact you were buying £350s worth of XBox for £33, they could just as easily refuse the sale in store as online.
 
Of course they could, but if the problem is noticed after people order on line then equally the problem may be noticed after people have bought from the shop...
 
The tesco mess up is becuase its the deal for Forza and a Wireless Controller for £33 when you buy a console, they just didnt mark it up correctly and had the console in the description.
 
I work at the price integrity department at Tescos (i am not talking about online here, just instore)
And not only is it store policy that we sell at what the shelf edge label displays (or what is marked on the product , which ever is lower) but it is the law at least according to tesco's.
We had trading standards in yesterday doing a surprise inspection and i had the store manager come directly up to me (he is an arrogant git and normally wont speak to you even if you are standing right next to him) and ask me if we was operating 100% legally.

Tesco will refun you the price of the item and more if it is marked incorrectly instore. So if you do see something mispriced defo go to customer service. This morning head office didn't send us down all the price increases so a lot was inadvertently missed. We gave away over 100 pounds in refuns before 9am (thats actually losing £100 plus the actual money taken for the product in the first place), luckily for me it was head office's fault :)
 
However, I doubt they would manage to mislabel both the shelf edge, and the till info. Odds of one being wrong is unlikely. Both is even less.

So it would flag up on the till as being £300, customer complains, cashier calls for manager, manager explains that the shelf label is wrong, and they aren't getting it for £30.

Alternatively, shelf edge is right, they try to buy it, comes up as £30 on the till.
Cashier then:
a) calls manager to check to see if its right
b) comments to the customer that its an amazing deal, request a break, and leg it to the console section.
 
Yes but if something is displayed for a price, they have to honour it, otherwise its classed as 'false advertising'....someone should be checking these kinda things b4 they go on display lol

don't, similar thing happened with me @ work when boss was off, local paper didn't put specific writing on the ad, i sold it as it was written on ad, & practically gave some stock away, boss wasn't to happy..... Thou I am still imployed there

Employed. What a shocking spelling error! (Sorry, but it is)

You didn't have to honour the prices in the paper, you could have just explained the error, and perhaps offered a discount on the actual price as a goodwill measure. That's probably why your boss was annoyed.

With that said, if you were working in retail it should ultimately be his responsibility as your manager to ensure you were at least reasonably well briefed in contract/retail/consumer law, so he only had himself to blame for profit losses.
