Popularity of Facebook

Its quite weird watching patterns of people signing up to facebook! I joined probably about a year ago as did all my uni friends in The U of Manchester network. Then friends from other unis joined. Then all of a sudden in around December all the people I knew from home joined through the Nottingham network. Every time I'm in labs I see several people on it!

edit: err that first bit was from a year ago.. hmm ;)

A fad IMO, with little actual use.

not really.. everyone at uni is suddenly connected in a way that could never happen without a site like facebook. You can look up almost anyone you meet, find vast numbers of embarrassing pictures of them and find out pretty much everything about them. Basically it's the ultimate in online stalking. Apart from that it is much easier (and possibly cheaper) to tell people about parties etc. with events than it is to tell people any other way, and I have no doubt that after leaving it's gonna be a lot easier to keep in touch with people.
Once you're on facebook you're there for good. You can check out any time you like but you can never leave, as they say.

ps. my sig again.

every opportunity..

facebook is awesome... but only if you know lots of people using it. I'd say it's now huge amongst my friend group (3rd year/recent alumni - and it's the non geeky crowd that use it the most).

It's a great place to put things you want to share - the best example being that we all went out last night, and by this evening over 3 different people had uploaded their pictures from the night - with an instant notification to all of our friends.

Some people won't like that, and think that it infringes on their privacy - that's fine, social networking webstes aren't really going to be your thing... but for those that don't mind what if their friends see what they've been up to then it's very useful - significantly easier than using sharing folders on msn/uploading to flickr then emailing everyone etc. Facebook was very *meh* (although better looking than myspace) until they added the newsfeed feature - that _really_ propelled it into the spotlight (most people i know have now stopped using myspace).

The site also works most of the time (i've not experienced an outage yet) unlike myspace which is buggy as hell. And the "networking" facility is interesting - unlike myspace where everyone is in your "extended" network.

[sorry for the rant on an old old thread :'( ]

edit: it's also replacing msn between people you "kinda" know. those people that an msn conversation would list about 3 minutes with, whereas facebook message is more like email and can last weeks and be infinately more interesting that "so how's work?" etc.

I think you have hit it on the nail on the head, it is also those reason why I only accept people I know in real life (with few exceptions) on Facebook.

I just signed up today actually - just because lots of people I know at work are always on it. I sent out a bunch of invites and already have 9 of them on my friends list. It's also nice because some are people who moved away and now I can see what they're up to and say "hi" occasionally in a more informal way than e-mail.

It's interesting as well because nobody I know is a "geeky" type - they're all ridiculously sociable and spend most nights out on the drink etc. But now they're slowly becoming more bound to their computers. Soon they will be like us :D

I actually think it's quite crap, in the fact that it's really restrictive. Unless I'm doing something wrong, it seems I can only browse the profiles of users attending my own institutes. Which IMO is totally crap. Myspace is indeed full of emo foobs, but, at least I can search for them/look at them/message them. As I said though, I might be doing something wrong? (I'm presuming that I am, because otherwise it seems mights localised, and against the all important networking ethos).

I hate it. I've already missed out on a few nights out etc. because people seem to think Facebook IS life now.

"Rich why didn't come out with us on Friday?"
'You went out Friday?'
"Yeah, I put a thing on Facebook about it"

...great :/

It's great for planning and advertising events. Photo sharing is great too, especially the tagging facility.

Some of the chat on there is really stinky, but it's pretty good at helping you keep up with people that you wouldn't otherwise see on a daily basis.

It's kinda popular up here, does get a little bit boring after a while, though its nice to keep in touch with some people!

Haha, I've had that response too, but usually I've been dragged out via text or something and only find out about the facebook event thingy long after I'm already out.

I quite like facebook, already spoke to some people that I haven't seen in years. I hate myspack with a filthy passion and only really log in if I'm being nosey for whatever reason. I should probably delete my account really.

See, people here seem to have gone the whole hog and use it instead of talking/texting/phoning entirely. It's damn annoying :(
