Porridge Oats - Water or Milk?

Traditionally you make it with milk, good and hot.... then you have a cup of cold milk that you dip the spoon of porridge into to cool it down, and for the extra taste... try it.
And a tot of whisky... and it's eaten standing up... and whatever other rubbish they told you at the Scottish tourism office.

Oats, water, salt, that's it.
Everything else is just an embelishment and nothing to do with tradition... except the tradition is actually that ye'll eat it however ye damn well please and anyone who doesn't like it can get stuffed.
 
I wrote that wrong lol, made with WATER not milk lol.

As for your guff, I dunno what yer problem is like... Dipping in cold milk is not an embellishment, its a rather practical means of cooling it down so you can scram it in without burning your mouth.

I do about 75/25 water/milk. I've just bought different oats from my usual, they're from Aldi. Tastes really really nice with much bigger flakes than I'm used to.

Take it off the fire and cook it with residual heat, so it cools but continues to cook.
Like I said, there is no tradition. You just do it however you like it.

Milk mostly but I also use Almond/Hazelnut but that's because I mix my Huel drinks with the non-dairy milk. Huel is my way of saving money on lunch meals.
 
Water... why don't you just rip up cardboard and eat that instead?

Porridge must be made with milk. Use fruit / nuts / dark chocolate to make it tasting amazing. I usually go with 60g oats to 200ml milk ratio for around 2 minutes in the microwave. It should be a bit underdone when it comes out so that it is perfect when you are able to eat it. Try to avoid sugar or honey.

Please though, eat something decent for dinner and have this for breakfast.

Why avoid sugar? Unless you mean white sugar, then I'd agree. I either use demerara sugar or condensed milk to sweeten.

Not good for you. Fruit tastes very sweet once you've cut down on sugar for a week or two. It's crazy how much sugar people add to their food (or eat with it added in already).

It does not need to be made with milk. Ask a purist scot (I'm not Scottish btw) and he'll tell you traditional porridge is oats, water, salt. I use about 25% milk and it's plenty creamy for me without being stodgy.
 
Just like an old fashioned Scot, water and salt and pour into a porridge drawer. Leave to set, cut and fry:D

No True Scotsman!!!

Milk is not necessary, though. If you want your porridge creamy make it with steel cut oats. If you want it far creamier than you'd even get with milk, make it with stone ground oats.

stop living in the 80s. The sugar = bad rhetoric died along time ago.
It only became an issue because vast swafts of the population forgot what exercising is.
 
I totally agree about the sugar. Sugar and salt are about the worst two things for potential diabetes and heart condition. That said, I eat way too much sweet stuff, especially with all my baking. I'm replacing some with just eating apples and satsumas. Honey is a little better and I do a spoonful in my porridge. I've mostly left salt out of my porridge recently, but I've changed to lo salt which is 66% reduced sodium so I can get away with some.
