Port Forwarding for games?

Im just asking as im confused about whether you have to open ports for both inbound and outbound traffic or just outbound? As an example both the dead space 2 and black ops manuals state which ports to forward but doesnt state whether it means outgoing, incoming or both?
Anyone give me a clue?

Inbound only.

As a default on most consumer ruouters, inbound ports are closed for protection (firewall) and all outbound ports should be open and work fine. So you will only ever need to open inbound ports.
