Portal :)

Valve pay EA to distribute their retail discs. The only involvement EA had beyond that was in the [average] PS3 port they did for the Orange Box. They didn't have any involvement in the production of the game(s), they just ported across the existing content to PS3.

I thought EA helped fund Valve for Half-Life 2/Source engine?
If not, that I apologise.

Whatever. Sick of you trolling me in consoles now, it's tiresome. Your posts have little to no basis in fact, devoid of points and you also do it in Sports.
I have responded to a lot of your posts recently, I'll admit, but there's nothing personal about it. You accuse me of trolling, and yet you seem to enjoy going in to threads on forums I read and starting arguments with people. I happen to disagree with some of those arguments, deal with it.

As said, all EA do for Valve is distribute their solid copies of HL2 and its expansions. They aren't their publishers by a long shot. Valve are beholden to no-one.

If you think a game that's just over an hour long, easy, has little replayability through story (as the challenge is gone), and is 2/3's by the hand tutorial is game of the year material, Jeez.
Amazing what a catchy, gimmicky and geeky song at the end of a game can do.
I think a game that is 3-4 hours of brilliant presentation and real quality, plenty of replayability through challenges and new maps, and an entirely unique style and idea, is game of the year material, yes. It has nothing to do with an amusing-the-first-time song.

I think you just have a different sense of what GoTY should be. You seem to think they can only go to grand, overarching, behemoths of games, with pages and pages of storyline, and hours of action. I simply see it as the most enjoyable game I played. If a "free flash game" had entertained me as much as Portal did, then it would be my GoTY, because I'm not snobby about things like that. I'm guessing you'd never rate a puzzle game as GoTY?

When you think about it logically, such a short game shouldn't really win GOTY.

But then, if people truly felt that Portal was their most enjoyable game in that year (regardless of length), it makes sense for them to class it as their GOTY.

It doesn't actually matter either way, as with reviews it is entirely subjective. There is no right or wrong.

My point is, Portal shouldn't be a GotY.
The Orange Box possibly, but not Portal. It lacks replayability, I'd understand if it had continued support through map packs etc.. but it doesn't. It should have been a lot longer too.

As for puzzle games, they are amongst my favourite genres. Broken Sword as a point and click for example is in my top 5 games of all time. Kula World is another game I loved (and for me is better than Portal) and I already enjoy Marble Blast Ultra.

As for slating you for trolling Weebull, I apologise, I had a really rough day last nigh, I had family around that were driving me mad, I'd been driven out my room to make space for them and had a very uncomfortable night on the couch :(.

Tetris was definitely GOTY, but portal isn't a puzzle game like that, it's a play once kinda game as once you've solved the levels there's not much more to it.

I wouldn't, because I still think gameplay is the overriding factor in what I like from a game, and I enjoy quality over quantity. I'm glad you mentioned Tetris, cos I was going to mention it. It's got barely anything going for it in an objective sense (even compared to games of its time), but it trumps all that with utterly superb gameplay.

Portal might be short, lacking in story, and so on, but I loved the gameplay to death, and thought it was done brilliantly.

it werent that easy!! it took me about 8 hours and was IMPOSSIBLE at times most of it i was looking at walkthroughs on youtube for the bigger levels..one of the hardest games ever. it was good tho and has the best ending ever.

I thought it was an enormous breath of fresh air and a sheer joy to play but I wouldn't feel right about voting for it as GOTY.
