Porter Cable

Merlin, when you pic the PC up, and have 'practised' on your own car, come round and do mine will ya mate :p

Man you're brave letting a 100% noob loose on your spanking new car, do you like the matt finish? :p

I was going to get a scrap panel to practice but tbh I can't be arsed.

Going to print that guide off and follow that.

It's really quite light swirl marks only visible under strong electric light but I know they are there and I want them gone.

Does anyone know how much polish I'll need in ml?

So let me clear, the group advice is I such desist in the use of my Black and Decker circular sander then? :p

In my complete noobish way I was wondering how a multi hundred quid 'Porter Cable' differs from a Black and Decker, providing you use the correct pads with both..

Na it'll be fine.

For really deep scratches I prefer my Electric Planer.

One will cause more swirl marks than when you started, and the other won't.

:p

Actually if I remove the humour element I have a Bosch circular device and it did come with a polish pad and a duster pad and it is variable speed so I see no reason why with a little care it would not suffice. Mind you, don't really want to try it out on mine...

Doesn't sound like too bad swirling then, you'll probably get away with just using Menzerna Final Finish polish, and 250ml (the smallest you can buy IIRC) would easily do you and probably another car. Too much polish and its just going to take ages to break down, when loading the PC I draw a cross on the pad with the polish then a tiny drop in each quadrant.

If you need to step up to remove the swirls then get 250ml of Menzerna 3.01. CleanYourCar.co.uk sell a good Menzerna sample set for £30 which comes with 5 polishes including the 2 I mentioned above I think thouhg they also sell all the Menzerna polishes in 250ml I think.

To be honest your going to have to be going some to damage the paint using the PC, but for your first panel I suggest doing one that you can reach easily i.e no starting on the roof as it can be more difficult to judge the effect you're having on the paint and control the PC.

HTH

Yeah i have a Bosch unit, has soft start and variable speed, it may work tbh.

But i dunno where you would get the pads from, mind it wouldnt be comfortable to use on the entire car.

With the correct pads and speed setting, whats the difference :p

Are you talking about an orbital polisher, or a random orbital polisher?

I was assuming you jokingly meant a bog standard orbital jobbie, which obviously won't have the same action as the random orbital polisher.

Good O.

I've got nearly full small bottles of SFX1 and 3. So I'm going to use them.

I dunno, whats the difference anyway? :p

The orbital one is a definate no no, greatly increased chance of the paint looking worst than when you started.

Random orbital polishers have a dual action that cuts the paint surface evenly & virtually no chance of burning it.

The PC is an elliptical polisher that polishes like the old spiragraphs used to work. Apparently prevents creating more swirls and distributes more evenly

Are Maxtool worth dealing with?

They are advertising the 7424 at just under £85.

Aye but by the time you've paid for shipping, tax etc not to mention the transformer and cabling you need to get it working, you are around the £150 mark and then you'll need to buy pads, plates and compounds. It all adds up.
