Possible 7700K Kabylake specs released....

I'm still trying to work out the point of Skylake tbh.. Why would anyone buy a 6700k over the X99 counterpart?

Doesn't take a genius to know why:

Significantly cheaper than X99
Better gaming performance at stock
Much easier to overclock
Overclocks higher on average
Runs much cooler (and thus quieter)
Higher IPC, meaning better performance in lightly threaded games

Obviously for anyone rendering video on a regular basis, X99 is superior, though the vast majority don't.

I'll be buying a new system soon, and it is confusing. I see comments like 'why would anybody by Skylake over X99' and then I see reasons like the above and I think - that's why?

If I've browsing the web, playing games, watching films, Office - surely Skylake and the reasons above are why I'd buy? I'm not interested in overclocking which I imagine most people outside enthusiasts aren't either.

A 6600k etc would be ideal for you, no need for X99.

Im in the same boat Kiyoshi, desperately trying to weigh up a Skylake system or pay ~ £120 more for a 5820k. Tough decision for sure :)

Am also in the same boat..

Am thinking of going for the skylake 6700k as it looks like you would need a huge overclock on a 5820k to get the same performance in games as a 6700k..

I think it will only benefit laptops and machines with no discrete cards. The actual CPU improvements are minor and the clock speed will remain roughly the same.

A cash grab. :D

A certain amount of people will buy every chip they put out, plus some will buy just because it's new and they're in the market. Suppose that's also why back-to-school always has to have new products, people just wanna buy something new in the hopes it will last longer or be "better" somehow.

Couldn't have put it better myself. Epeen fanatics. Spot on Orangey

My i5 760 @ 4Ghz is still fighting it's corner, would love to upgrade but it's pure itch. I don't need to.

Whoops, spoke too soon. Switched the rig on this morning to be greeted by a big cloud of smoke and a lovely electrical burning smell. Investigations under way but looks like I may be more interested in new cpu technology than I thought I was :)

When Skylake was lunched it’s lack of availability and demand from early adaptors meant the price of 6700K made it quite a bit more expensive then the X99’s 5820k and for a while even with the added expense of a X99 platform it was worth getting a 5820K as you got 2 extra cores and a chip which overclocked to similar levels.

Today the price of Skylake has gone down and the Haswell-E has been replaced by Broadwell-E both of which are more expensive than a 6700K. Gamers don’t need more than 4 cores and Skylake offers slightly better IPC and a newer cheaper platform.

It's been like that with Intel's tick tock cycle which started nearly 10 years ago, new architecture -> smaller process -> new architecture etc. But due to how hard it is now to shrink the process, it's become process -> architecture -> optimization, so instead of 2 generations being based on the same architecure, it's now 3.

So that explains why there have been virtually no gains since 2xxx and 3xxx series.

Think my 3770k will last another 2-3 years like this. Oh well, that was a good buy considering the whole PC cost me around only around £500 (1/3rd price bgrade mobo, quarter price case from MM and already had PSU/monitors) 4 years ago.
