Possible GPU Failure - Time to Upgrade?

Hi everyone,

I write possible in the subject line, as I can't be sure of the root cause of what I'm suffering from.

Basically my system has recently become noisier and noisier - instead of being sensible and inquisitive - I chose to ignore this.

Now when I fire up the system, there is a massive amount of distorting and flickering on the screen, when I get into windows, its at minimum resolution and more often than not the colour is completely distorted.

Machine bought late 2010 - HW specs are;
CPU: I5 760 o/c'd to 4ghz
Motherboard: ASUS P7 P55D-E LX
GPU: Palit Geforce GTX460 (1024)
Memory: 4gb Corsair XMS3 DDR3 (2 * 2 gb)
PSU: Powercool 750w 80plus (pc-750auba-b)
Boot drive is a 60gb Corsair Evo ssd

Through device manager I have uninstalled / reinstalled and tinkered with the Nvidia drivers, however no joy. Device manager is showing that the gpu has been disabled by windows (error code 43 if i recall). Nothing I've been able to try has remedied this!

Does anyone have any thoughts as to what may be causing my issue? My supposition is that the GPU is fried, and its time to replace - however if i'm going to do that, I am thinking I may also upgrade the PSU and RAM.

Thoughts?

It does sound like the GPU is the issue, have you checks the temps of the system lately and dust build up.

Also I would look at investing in a decent brand PSU.

Is there a possibility of testing the GPU in another system?

Hi RJC - thanks for the response.
Only recently opened it up, and there was a good amount of dust build up on the CPU Fan. Will have to admit that whilst the system was up and running, I payed it little mind in terms of temps / maintenance etc.

Also unable to prove in another system :(

Micky, in terms of budget, well, its flexible - however I have a bad habit of spending more than I need to!

My initial thoughts run to something along the lines of:

GPU

Or

PSU

Memory

The above would give me a nice bump in terms of performance, I can afford to spec up to the latest graphics cards, however as I predominately play Football manager, starcraft etc I think it would just be over kill. If i go for a 260 or 270 and some great FPS is released which I feel i have to buy, i can always pick up another gpu and crossfire them?

Or shall I just bite the bullet and go for a 290... enablers please feel free to jump in now!

Lastly - my motherboard - fit for purpose or should I be looking to update that as well?

Thanks guys.

Lets talk gpus - does Not have to be AMD. If you were to set the budget for that component at 250 (+/- 50) where Would your vote be?

I'd go for the MSI, mostly because if you ever decide to watercool it, EK blocks are compatible, according to their site.

Ok chaps, that mis 290 looks good. Assume the super flower 550w will be fine with it?

Looks like this could be an expensive evening!

Well guys - pulled the trigger today!

Very excited to for tomorrow, thanks for those who shared their input - now, bearing in mind I initially linked a 260x, anyone guess what gpu I ended up ordering? :-)

so what gpu,psu and memory did you order :p dont forget to change the xmp profile for the ram in the bios for the right speed :)

Excuse the poor pic, bad lighting!

The card is somewhat bigger than my outgoing 460! Now eyeing a new case and monitor! some shiny new peripherals wouldn't hurt either ;)

So instead of a 260x and people trying to get you to get a 290 you went even further and opted for a 290x? LOL :)

Im sure it will do you proud, enjoy
