My friend gave me an acer aspire 5100 laptop with a booting problem, he had just done a fresh install of Win XP Pro and now it was displaying a message saying "Error Loading Operating System" I took the laptop and installed Ubuntu 11.10 and it worked fine, I upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 and then returned the laptop, the next day he rang me and told me that the laptop had displayed "Error Loading Operating System" again! So he's given me the laptop again and he said see if I can get it to work. Any ideas? Any programmes to install? Cant exactly dismantle the laptop as it isn't mine so any programmes etc that will check the HDD for errors?

If you know what brand of hard drive is in there, most major makers have tools to test the drives. Alternatively Hitachi's hard drive diagnostic tool is meant to work for any drive and can be booted from CD (although I haven't used it personally) so might be worth a shot.

If windows has been reinstalled you could try running scandisk from a dos prompt as well which might give you an idea.

Hope that helps.
