This is a mockup for the look of the up and coming MacPro:

Personally I think it looks odd, somehow the double disk drives stand out too much, I hope Apple take another direction.

What should be good though is cause I assume the Conroe and Woodcrest cpus are going to create a lot less heat than the baking hot PowerPC G5 it could mean one of two things; they will be more space inside for internal hard drives, the current PowerMacs only have maximum of two, or they can keep the huge heatsinks and fans which will mean these things will be cooler and therefore even more quiet.

I think I would like the quiet thing, also it could lead to overclocking potential.
 
I think there'll be more than one IEEE1394B port. Who wants to bet that that's what Apple will want to use to connect to an Intel Xserve RAID?

It will probably we air cooled this time or at least have a much smaller water cooling system and there will be room for many more disks, both 3.5" SATA HDDs and 5.25" optical drives.

hopefully it'll come with 120mm fans rather than 80mm ones, altho I doubt I'll be able to afford one :) I'm not sure whether to get a mac or upgrade my pc atm, am just waiting to see what the macpro comes out like and at what cost before deciding.
 
Think Secret reckons there will be a 'radical' design change in the Mac Pro with the Intel chips.. so it's rumors and counter rumors :)
 
yer I remember reading on one site it'd be similar to the old one and on another site they said it'd be something totally different :)
 
It'll be interesting to see what they come out with tbh.
If they can make a G5-a-like look, with dual CoreDuos, a high end gfx card & silent, i can imagine a lot of PC enthusiasts buying one.
I certainly would. If i had the money! :p :(
 
If they keep the design simular I will be VERY happy, afterall I think the Power G5 is one of the nicest looking tower computers I have owned (Apple and otherwise) :cool:

I just pray that they won't be stupidly priced... I'm thinking £2500 upwards

They won't ever be able to do multiple Core 2 Duos in a single machine as they're not built to allow for multi-CPU configurations. The chips that would be able to handle it are the 51xx Xeons based on the Woodcrest core. Think of them as Conroes with faster FBSs and better memory. :)

I know that Conroes dont do 'traditional' SMP, but the projected server/professional versions of the Core architecture does, and i dont see a reason why Apple wouldnt be interested in using them in their G5 replacement/s.
 
As BillyTheImpaler said its floating around that Apple are going with the Woodcrest core and using the Xeon server-type CPUs so that the professional users can reap the benefits of multiple CPUs with multiple cores a la "quad" system that they currently offer.

This is the gossip on all the Mac podcasts and a few websites anyway.. kinda makes sense why they'd do this to me :)
 
I am hoping, but probably in vain, that they will release two lines one with Conroe and good graphics cards for us general users and gamers then the other with Woodcrest and all the quad core stuff for designers and powerusers.

Problem with that of course is the lower line with conroe would be cutting into iMac terratory and I would be a similar price if not cheaper as you would not get a monitor with it.

Lets hope they announce something at WWDC and put all the rumors to rest.

I heard they were using the dual core xeon "woodcrest" chip. Possibly in a dual chip configuration meaning a "quad core" I guess :)
 
The iMacs use CoreDuo's. The MacPros will be using the Core2Duo (Conroes), so they'd be quite a difference in performances.

Woodcrest, then Kentsfield I'd imagine.

Core 2 Duo will replace Core Duo in the future.

By 2007: MacPro = Core 2 Quad (Kentsfield) - In theory, 8, 12 or 16 core machines *drools*
iMac = Core 2 Duo (Conroe)
Laptoprs = Core 2 Duo (Merom)

Thats how I see it happening.
