Possible new build

Tempted to get a new system, as I really want more GPU performance and DX11.

Currently I have:

680i Sli mobo
E8400
6GB DDR2
2x GTX260 216

I can't run STALKER at more than ~20FPS at 1920x1080

Would it be worth me getting a new system? I was thinking maybe the Asrock Fatal1ty mobo or similar, an i5 2500k and 8GB RAM. Then down the line get a GTX570 or something.

I know it's always best to buy at once to avoid bottlenecks etc, I just can't afford to.

Cheers.

Thanks guys, that's pretty much exactly what I was looking at.

So that combo, coupled with my existing HX620W PSU, would a worthwhile investment?

I'm hoping I could sell my current RAM, mobo, CPU and GPUs for ~£150-200 to partly fund the upgrade.

Would 620W suffice for that plus a single GTX570 or similar? I run 2xGTX260 atm with so issues whatsoever (everything is OC'd too).

Good to hear thanks.

So would that system provide a big performance boost in games, such as Deus Ex, STALKER etc?

How does this motherboard compare?

thats a micro-atx thus smaller than the asrock mentioned, what case do you have? the asus doesn't have support for pci-e3.0.

unless you really must upgrade the graphics card right now I would suggest you hold off for a few months with the new nvidia 6xx series and amd 7xxx series due out.

oh and with the amd bulldozer cpu due out(this moth apperently) might be worth holding off to see how it compares to sandy bridge.

Damn, I always look to upgrade when something new is on the horizon!

Well I just got a letter from the taxman saying they owe me £423 :) So that's this new build sorted :D

The ASRock was spec'd with the horizon in mind :) Gen 3 so it's ready for the new 600 series and 7000 series GPU's, as it supports PCI 3.0

Yeah that's very true, I do like the look of it. It didn't get a fantastic review, but I guess I'd much rather go off real life experience and recommendations on here than a few reviews.

Any advantage of the Extreme7?

Also does DDR3 Triple channel have anything worthwhile over Dual Channel? I'm so out of the loop it's unreal.

been said lots of times but triple channel DOESN'T WORK on 1155 motherboards, its for 1366 motherboards. you need dual channel ram for 1155.

for extreme4 gen3 vs extreme7 have a look at http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18307231 few of the features have been mentioned.

OK so I'm pretty much set on AsRock Z68 Extreme 4 Gen 3, 2500K i5, and 8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 12800 RAM.

Should I get 4x 4GB sticks instead, or does current tech still have trouble with all the DIMM slots being occupied when OCing?

Also, I'll be running it with the Corsair H60 that I already have. Can anyone recommend me a 120mm fan with good airflow, but is considerably quieter than the stock corsair fan? I have noctua and scythe fans in the house. Should I use them?

don't think there's an issue with overclocking and all slots being filled, unless you're doing something for which 16gb will be usefull may as well save money.

if you have different fans then there is no harm in trying them out to see if any of them give better performance/less noise etc, you aren't restriced to just using the corsair fan. you can even try adding a 2nd fan(some say it improve the temps others say it doesn't).

Yeah, I know what you mean. I game at 1920x1080 but I can't see me actually needing more than 8GB, so 2x4GB should more than suffice.

Think I'll order those bits today or tomorrow, and see how they get along with my H60 cooler and GTX260 cards :)

Parts ordered. I should have ordered it yesterday and save £20, but I forgot. I ordered it today and got the free postage but I want it tomorrow so I can build it on my day off so I paid the extra £19 pmsl.
