Hi all

I am looking to invest in a new keyboard and mouse but am struggling to find anything that I like as much as my G15 (V1) and MX518 :( I'm hoping you folks may be able to aid the search :)

My 518 is on deaths door from the well known cable break problem. This is a cause of much disappointment for me because my last 518 lasted around 5 years, but my current 518 has lasted less than 2 :(

In the last couple of years I have tried an MX1000, a Lachesis, a Storm Sentinel, and a Kone V2 - none of which I can get on with. I'm using my Lachesis as a spare at the moment but oh dear I cant get on with it. I mostly play 1.32 Quake III Arena (Real Q3 not that QL ****!), but also do a lot of SP FPS gaming too. I'm a low sense player and I use a big Steel Series QcK Heavy cloth mat

Is it me or are laser mice just naff for lower sens FPS gaming? I need an optical! I have been a huge fan of the MX-5xx series form factor for many years and have come to rely on the button layout for Q3 (2 on the thumb and the 2 on top behind the scroll wheel). Do I just plump for a G400 and be done with it, or do I try something else and adapt? I used an MS Wheel Mouse Optical before I had my first Mx500, but I simply cant imagine having to remap the 4 weapons I use on the mouse to my keyboard :( I have been playing with the same cfg since about 2002 so adapting now will be a headache.

My G15 V1 has been an absolute diamond of a product. Still going strong after 6 years. The WSAD keys are losing their coating though and the LED's are not as bright as they could be but it still works flawlessley. The only problem is I have been ham fisted and broken off the plastic lugs on the wrist rest and rear feet :( So its no longer comfortable for gaming on as the keys are angled down towards the rear of the keyboard when it sits flat on the desk. If I could get another I would, but the only available 'new' versions are aparrently not up to the same quality according to what I have read. I can well believe it too, as my current 518 has lasted less than half the time of my previous one. So if the quality of the mice have declined it makes sense that the kyboard quality will have dipped as well.

Budget wise I dont have one really, but if I am going to spend a lot of money, the product needs to match the price in terms of stability, longevity and performance. For instance my G15 has been used most days for 6 years and apart fromn the damage I have caused still works fine. I need reliability, build quality and I need consitency. I dont want to mess around with having to RMA a product thats still at Beta stages and has no right being on the market at all (thats another topic but its an approach both hardware and games developers are taking - whatever happened to releasing something that works out of the box?).

I made the epic mistake of buying a razer Lycosa a couple of years back. Oh dear. Draw a line under that one......Straight back to my G15.

I'm not overly bothered about mechanical vs dome keys because I have got along just fine without mechanical for the last 6 years! BUT the keyboard must have a full QWERTY layout with a full size enter key - I cant be doing with those tiny enter keys! So layout wise the same as a G15 V1. Although I dont use Macros for gaming, I have found the G keys on my G15 very useful for assigning form data for log ins etc (usernames, email address, password etc). Plus I cant see the future so I may get into a game where the G keys are needed. G-Keys wont be a deal breaker but I would prefer the option of programmable keys.

To sumarise:

Mouse Requirements:

Optical preferred (Any DPI as I am not drawn in by useless DPI figures. 6000 DPI? No ta, im not playing on a 72 inch TV!). Would not rule out a laser thats tried and tested at low sens - but so far im struggling to find one.
Durability / build quality
MX-5xx variant button layout preferred (would consider other configurations if the mouse was phenomenal)
Wired preferred, but would not turn away a phenomenal wireless - again needs to be tried and tested
Budget - Any - but i need it to last as my missus aint gonna let me spend again for a few years! :D
Preferably NOT a razer product

Keyboard Requirements:

Full QWERTY layout with normal sized enter key.
Programmable keys preferred, but not a deal breaker
Backlighting preferred (blue if possible) - but again not a deal breaker.
No preference on mechanical or domed so long as quality is class leading.
Durability / build quality
good quality feet and wrist rest - I prefer my keyboard to sit at an upward angle and not flat on the desk.
Budget is same as the mouse.
Preferably NOT a Razer Product

So far my short list is pretty boring but I admit I havent kept up with all of the products out there, so there may be things available that I dont know about.

Shortlist so far:

Logitech G400 mouse
Logitech G510 keyboard

REALLY like the look of the Corsair K90 but the corsair forums are full of woe (Some people have had to RMA their keyboard 3 times!) and depending on the pics you find, im unsure about the enter key size.

Any help and advice appreciated, along with actual user experiences of products.

Cheers

I can suggest to you one from SS sensei (raw if you want to save money/kana/kinzu v2. I am currently using a sensei at low dpi, and it is a very nice mouse to use indeed. People complain about bugging, however I have never experienced any bugs. The sensor is slightly different, with a slight positive accel. but once you have gotten used to this tiny variation the mouse tracks very nicely indeed. The stock sensei is a little heavy if that bothers you, the raw is lighter as it has less internals.
As for keyboard, I suggest the 7g or 6gv2(saving money). These mechanical keyboards are extremely durable, although the keystrokes are a little loud. I find my 7g very nice to type on, I have increased in speed since moving from my ****** domed keyboard. It fits your criteria, bar back light.

I have the K90 but am sending it back because of some led's not working. It is a good quality keyboard though which looks and feels amazing. The only downside is it's not fully mechanical, and the membrane keys IMO are worse feeling than my old G15 v2 keys. All the macro, Escape and F keys, and from PrtScn to PageDown keys are membrane, it may or may not be a deal with you depending if you use them keys a lot.

You say you're not bothered about mechanical or dome, but have you tried a mechanical keyboard yet? Again IMO the difference is huge with the mechanical keys feeling a lot more satisfying to press.

I'm afraid it appears to be a common problem with the K90. There is page after page of forum topics over at corsair with very disappointed K90 owners. The main problems seem to be faulty LED backlights and Beta grade software/firmware that either bricks the keyboard as soon as you update or causes it to act erratically.

Its such a shame because the K90 would be a perfect keyboard for me, but I'm afraid I need a product that works properly and I feel corsair is letting its customers down by releasing a Beta grade product (its not just the K90 either, theres a lot of issues with the M90 and the M60 too).

No I haven't tried a mechanical keyboard yet! I am a little scared because I have heard its like Heroin. Very addictive and once you go onto it, you rarely come back! :) Joking aside, it does not really matter too much to me as long as a keyboard works properly, lasts, and has a decent key rollover.

@chrashz - Can you provide any information about the wrist rest on the 7g? Does it slope downwards to the front of the keyboard? In a lot of photos it kind of looks flat with a pretty large lip on the end.

Cheers
