Possible project: tailgater deterrent

Simple - you slow down.

This creates a bigger gap around you (Eg in front), so if you need to brake in an emergency you have more room to do it

Well yes I do this anyway. However, that's got nothing to do with managing the person behind me, beyond the vague hope that he'll take the hint and back off.

As for the topic at hand, Burnsey, that's a good point I hadn't thought of that. Can you get parking sensors which use laser or RF signals to measure distance? Also, the GPS idea is a good one. Can you get one which will output selected data to a computer?

all you need is something like that active cruise control thing that bmw or audi use.....

ie. get a front bumper off an audi/bmw and bolt it to the back of yours - when someone gets too close, your reg plate swivels round (007 style) and reveals the text "please go away" or words to that effect.

They will probably just laugh, carry on, or get even more angry than they already are :p

They'll probably be more inclined to take the **** if anything.

If anyone gets too close, I rest my foot on the brake pedal, just enough to bring the lights on but not actually slow the car down. This works very well for me.

Why not hook up the sensor to a oil slick generator underneath the car? That would be dangerous yet awesome. Or maybe some rearward-facing HID Main Beams?

or be to busy reading a scrolling lcd message and smash into the back of him if he slows down lol.

would it even be legal?

just get one of those mooning men from the 90's and stick a really powerful laser pointer between his butcheeks aimed about eye height :D

what happens when you come to a round-a-bout and have to stop? or a junction? Surely the sign would illuminate unless you have it rigged to not work when in neutral... In which case how would you park on a hill? You'd have to wire it to the ignition...

sounds like a whole heap or effort for very, very, little reward.

Ignore tailgaters unless you are blatantly in the way. In which case get out of the way. If it is really bad just pull over and let them pass. Easy.

If they go into you from behind it's their fault, their error.

Just keep tapping your brake pedal without actually applying it every now & then, usually works.
Or pull up in the middle of the road & get out & look at your back bumper & the front of theirs & say your just checking the tow rope is secure :p
