I want a new graphics card to play with, but until there is a single card that's double the performance of my crossfire 7950s theres absolutely no point what so ever for me. one 980 or 290x is slower than my 7950s crossfired, don't want to shell out for a 295x2 to double my performance, so when one single gpu card is the same speed as a 295x2 then ill upgrade, but im getting impatient now, had 7950s for ages!

There's not a chance in hell you won't own a new GPU till 2016 boom. Soon as some new top end card lands you buy it :p

I'm really going to try and resist.. If I can hold out until 2016 and get a card that offers 40%/50%+ more performance and maybe 4K monitor that'll be sweet.

Chances are I will buckle when 390X / Titan X launch :o but I would like to think I can resist ! :p

same boat dude, why I'm still hanging on to mine, they are simply beastly in crossfire, the bang for your buck we got on 7950 cards was and is insane..Been the best cards I've ever owned.

AMD hints at Pirate Islands GPUs made on the 28nm Node – 20nm APUs a Possibility

Read more: http://wccftech.com/amd-pirate-islands-gpu-28-nm-apus-20nm/#ixzz3L1QjY2Tg

If AMD can get the kind of numbers on performance and TDP that are being reported in the press/rumor sites on 28nm then I would be very impressed. If it's just because they switched to a smaller process then they will still look like a good buy what would it say about the quality of engineers and chip designers they now employ?

There's a good chance AMD will use a new souped-up 28nm process that offers similar benefits to a normal shrink. It's available @ Global Foundries.

I'm really going to try and resist, 290X 8GB is enough for me @ 1440P. If I can hold out until 2016 and get a card that offers 40%/50%+ more performance and maybe 4K monitor that'll be sweet.

Isn't 8gb a bit overkill@1440p m8?? Would have thought 4gb would have been plenty...

(says the man with 4gb cards and a 1440p monitor :p)

Shadow of Mordor uses over 6GB @ ultra. Few other games are vram hoggers as well. Nice to have a bit left in the bank just in case.

The card itself is really nice, performance wise there's little in it for me in my experience with all the cards @ 1440p. The 980 is faster but the 290X isn't miles behind.

Now all I have to do is resist the upcoming cards. Although if they are only 4GB, it will make it easier for me. I will only run 8GB+ cards from now on lol.

Fairy muff m8, I can understand your reasons :)

I'm gonna try to hold on for Titan X or the next AMD gen card till I switch so I can get 6/8GB

An overclocked 980 is quicker than xfire 7950's. I went from 670 sli and the 980 when overclocked is about 10% faster

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1074?vs=1351

swings and roundabouts...the fastest Valley bench on a 980 is 200 points less than mine..other benches like Heaven puts it 200 points more. They really do perform around the same to be honest. Not good enough to upgrade to single card to get the same performance as two 7950's...Will only go single card when I see a minimum 25% boost over what I have got now.

A overclocked 980 is no where near as fast as overclocked 7950s I think you will find.
Check the firestrike thread: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18485414

The only way one 980 will beat two 7950s is with liquid nitrogen

Here is the top water cooled 980 overclocked
13238. GFX Score 15723. 980. Water cooled. Physics Score 13334. CPU 4770K @ 4.7 Water cooled - Tipes - Link

Heres my 7950s on Air overclocked
12018. GFX Score 16942. 7950. Air cooled. Physics Score 8287. CPU 2500K @ 4.9 Air cooled - IceShock - Link

Look at the graphics scores btw, talking about gpus here not the cpu or combined scores.. a 980 averages out at 15500 by looking at peoples results, two 7950s average out at 16750 graphics score.

So like I say only way to beat the graphics score of two 7950s overclocked is to overclock a 980 with liquid nitrogen etc, but ofc in gaming, it depends on how well the game scales with crossfire, but raw performance a 980 cannot beat 2x 7950s.

Not great news if true (but it *is* Fudzilla). nVidia are gonna rack up a TON of sales between now and then;

http://www.fudzilla.com/home/item/36492-amd-next-gen-graphics-are-caribbean-islands

I read that as, faster GCN Hawaii cards are coming soon to take on the 970 / 980 and then AMD will launch a new architecture in the summer 2015. That seems like a sensible approach from AMD imho.

There is normally a gap between launches from both camps, so this is per the norm.

The only disappointing thing is that it looks like 28nm could still be here right up until Summer time 2015.. This has been the longest on one node ever..

So 8pack must have been on about this?

If it is to be made at GF, perhaps it will be on 28SHP or FDSOI. Improvements from a more refined process would stack nicely with a reworked Hawaii and easily beat 980.

Makes me wonder even more about Pirate. With this news the only real option would be 16FF+ unless GF magically pull something out of their arses.
