I paid for a 7950 to a seller on gumtree through paypal. He said he was posting the card at 3pm yesterday and I've woke up to an email from him saying his paypal is suspended and that I should dispute the payment immediately. What worries me is he has said nothing about the postage, and if his account had been suspended overnight the card would still have been delivered. I've read up on paypal and it looks likely that I will get the money back as I have all the evidence in emails of what he said he was doing.

Anyone had anything similar?

Paypal normally side with the buyer.

If you haven't received the item and he can't prove that you have then you will get the money back.
 
Yes. Accounts can get suspended if they're suspected of fraud.

Bare in mind this can happen to anyone.

My friend and member on these forums (ST4RF1R3) sent me a £5 donation towards my battlefield 3 server and he had his account temp suspended while they investigated for fraud.

It all came back clean (of course) and eventually i got the payment, albeit a week or two later.
 
The way I understood it is paypal can still issue me the refund without actually getting the money back, they just put his account into debt with the amount. I suppose if I don't get it back it teaches me a lesson never to use gumtree again.

You should get the cash back, but if he had the account suspended they might send the cash after his suspension has finished.
Either way i hope all gets sorted out for you! nothing worse than being scammed.

they won't wait - if he's been picked up for fraud then they'll have frozen his account so he can't move the money and then they'll pay out to you as soon as they find in your favour, even if his account doesn't have enough they'll pay out anyway and then pursue him for the money

Yep as Andy said,
Got scammed myself last month with an ipad 3,got my money back 24 hours later.
 
Yeah hoping for a quick resolution as I want to order another graphics card. If he can't respond to the dispute though I think it could take a few days.

Paypal will look after you as you're the buyer & don't let it put you off Gumtree either as I have had untold mint deals buying & selling on there, to be honest Gumtree is the only place I use other than MM here.

If I get the money back then I suppose I'd use gumtree again as I know I'm covered. The deal did sound a little good to be true but he seemed genuine and even sent pictures of the card.
 
If there's distance involved then I take it to Home phone numbers & get the addy up & Google map it etc
I've found that genuine people like to be checked out/asked the right questions & they also appreciate the use of home phones, Any info I ask for I give them as well, By the time the deal is ready to get done we both feel secure that both parties are genuine & all is well.
Only dodgey people are sketchy/have all the excuses & they are less likely to use Home phones.
Not completely foolproof as nowt is but it certainly cuts down the risk.
My last sale on Gumtree was my PS3 bundle, I had the buyers missus phone number & her brothers phone number saved in my phone & had rung them back to verify, then next day I had there house phone number & they were coming to me to pick it all up. :p
 
Well the guy has responded saying the reason he did not post it is because he checked his emails on the way to his post office at a friends house and noticed paypal had been suspended. This seems quite a coincidence that his paypal would be suspended within an hour after I send a payment and he couldn't even send me an email from his friends house stating what had happened. All I get is an email this morning saying his paypal "doesn't work any more" and that I should dispute the transaction.
 
Maybe it was suspended because of the large amount of money entering his account though.
 
they don't suspend an entire account for 1 dispute, they only put a hold on the money for that 1 transaction unless it was a brand new account

I don't have a home phone at all, no reason to have one other than it costing me £13 for nothing, it doesn't automatically make me dodgy
