Possibly time for a new car

1048 on insurance, a3 it is then :D

same engine, 2 insurance groups lower, £700 difference in insurance, go figure.

Good luck getting 35MPG out of anything with a blower attached :)
I'd like to suggest something with the PD130 lump but for 5-6k, I shall have to leave that to Fox :)

Dont limit a car out just because of insurance group, try getting a quote then if its unreasonable knock it off the list.

Exactly. My group 13 Rover 220 is only £400 a year more to insure than a Group 8 Rover 214.

I'm 20, 2 years NCB (1 year PP) in a bad postcode.

Have you had a look at Rovers? The 220 GSi's are cheap enough, good engine, uprated suspension and have quite a nice amount of kit. They're also rare and look the part

edit... Didn't read the entire thread, so don't flame me :)

You'll pay 2-3k more for the car though..

Yes but at least he will get some of that back when he sells it whereas he will get nothing back from paying £700 a year more for insurance.

He's spending what, 5-6k? Residual value is not going to make THAT much of a difference to overall ownership costs at this sort of price.

If people to continue to recommend this car regardless of the critiera specified, I'm going to start telling EVERYONE they need a 540i Sport even if they ask for a £500 first car.

The guy wants to spend £5-6k. You CANNOT get a Fabia vRS for anywhere near this. Come on guys :p

Blinking Fabia vRS is fast becoming the new 306 DTurbo on OcUK :p

Meh, im going to recommend it just because i love mine to death - take a higher amount out on loan for the win!

It still will be worth more when you sell, but.......

leon 20VT is gonna cost me £1700 a year TPFT from admiral

Thought on cars over 4k you had to have fc insurance????

True. But the the differential when selling will be smaller than that when buying..

But he will save £700 a year insurance so he MAY depending upon when he sells it save some money.

He won't save £700 a year at all, he'll save £700 in his FIRST year and considerably less in subsequent years assuming he avoids pranging it. NCB and age make DRAMATIC difference to insurance quotes at our age.

Ok lets go from here. http://www.carsource.co.uk/insurance-bonus?ID=null

So for 4 years insurance we have

a3 leon
yr1 1000 1700
yr2 700 1190
yr3 600 1020
yr4 500 850
Total 2800 4760

So even if he pays 2k more for an a3 and sells it for £500 more he will still be up. Assuming he has 0ncd as this time, if he already has some ncd the difference would be greater still.

Also lets not forget that he will have to find the extra for the insurance every year so in the first year he will have to find an extra £60 a month in the second year an extra £40 a month which can be hard especially if there are lots of other bills to pay, including the finance on the car, whichever he gets he will spend 5-6k on so if he ends up with a 2 year older A3 he has still saved 2k on insurance in 4 years.

Audi Servicing etc will always be considerably more expensive than say a Ford or Vauxhall etc so bear it in mind.

True, but the difference is negligible at specialists. It'll be offset against the cheaper insurance, anyway.

edit: As a marker, a 'major' service (all renewables minus cambelt, basically) on my A3 can be done at a local specialist for ~£250.
