Is the towel over the lens to stop mud, etc, from getting into the ~movement~?

The lens and camera are both fully sealed but it was raining throughout the day so just had it to wipe off the rain every so often. I did get splattered in mud including some on the lens as two players stopped themselves right in front of me and sprayed mud up. Should really look for a proper cover to stop all that messing around though
