Post how many PCs you run 24/7 at home ?

Why though? If it works for you then why change? However, for the everyday home user it is pointless leaving your computer on 24/7. Mine gets turned off when I leave the house unless im downloading.

Noise and dust pollution - not good with kids about :)
I was thinking of moving them to the loft but the temperature extremes up there may not be good for equipment (baking hot in the summer and freezing in the winter)

None.

I am interested in building a small media centre / file server / development server / email server box that would run 24/7, but on the whole I have no need for daft electrical bills ;)

Noise: yes I can understand that if its keeping someone awake.
Dust: not so sure. The computer will only be sucking in dust that is already in the air, it won't be adding any dust to the air.

Noise : I enjoy silent computing hence the reason why my servers are not in the same room as me ! I would simply die if they were.

Dust : True but dust settles but I would have thought that fans keep the dust in the atmosphere for longer ? Maybe ?

you don't listen to music or anything while you're at your computer? Only time I ever notice that my computer makes any noise is when I'm going to sleep and downloading something overnight. It does make a fair bit of noise but I'm always either listening to music, watching videos or playing games - all of which completely drown out the fan & hdd noise.

I would feel kind of empty just sitting reading this forum with no music and listening to the fans whirring.

I leave mine all all the time, its normally running seti or downloading. I do switch the monitor off though ;). Maybe I should work out how much this is costing me, then maybe i'd switch it off

My Mac mini is usually on sleep all the time, but it does that itself after 10 minutes. My MacBook sleeps when I'm not using it (lid shut).

So none. I don't see why you need to have a machine on 24/7. The only thing I leave on is my AirPort.

None.

Sometimes, especially on the weekend, the puter may well be on most of the day. Occasionally staying on over night if I am d/ling something.

Carbon emmisions!

My media PC stays on 24/7 (usually anyway), it connected to my TV and used for tv/music/dvds/downloading/etc... it's not used as a normal pc (it only has a remote, no keyboard/mouse!) so it's much easier to leave it on :) My other computer is a MacBook, and that just sleeps when not in use.

One - Its a server where i keep all my files/Music ect. I can load it over the net ect. also run a few websites on it. Mostly just a proxie. And its used to share my printer!

Specs are
sempron 3400+
768mb ram
3x500gb hd

same here.

Although, i don't turn it off, i put it into Stage3 standby (everything off except the RAM) where it consumes about 30 - 40 watts

Zero.

I occasionally leave it running overnight when downloading large files. But then I either set it up in a Manager which turns the PC off when the download is finished or I turn it off in the morning before I go to college/work.

Main room where I work : 2 desktop pcs bridged linux and windows

Thats reasonable

1 embedded PC which does my routing, X10/ automation / wap gateway. = 3

why not just buy a wireless/wired router?

Noise room : 1 Filestore seconday backup store with webcache/dnscache, 1 dev box databases webapps primary backup store, 1 win2003 server databases etc. 1 hot backup for a live machine in a data centre. = 4

Why do you need 4 PCs for backup/storage? Why not just have one decent server with several huge HDD's in?
