Post how many PCs you run 24/7 at home ?

Why do you need 4 PCs for backup/storage? Why not just have one decent server with several huge HDD's in?

He has a point, also if a machine is on constantly its highly likely more to fail as a backup device.....I use a couple of external USB 2 harddrives to back stuff up to, once its done, unplug, keep it safe, your datas then safe, if u do it on a daily basis, you can still use an external disk , and switch off when its done.

Theres tons of software out there for backing up stuff which would work like a 'data farm' sort of thing you have

LESS likely to fail I would have thought. Power up and power down cycles were common causes for disk failures.

I think you miss the point of how my machines back up. A master syncs via the internet every hour this master must be up 24/7. The master then dumps its self onto a local machine which is the master backup for all my local machines (laptops pdas etc) that then gets dumped onto the filestore. Yes it might be overkill but at least my data is save :)

Anyhoooo I have just decommissioned my windows 2003 server having been at it since last night. Powering down now.

That's not really true. A hard drive which is constantly on is less likely to fail than a disk which is regularly turned on and off, because it stays at a constant temperature. Hard drives in some servers are only permitted to be power-cycled a certain number of times (not many) before they're replaced.

one, my pc - set up as a e-mail server for my domain, - also its a hell of a lot easier to not have to turn it on and wait for it to load up :p

but usually other pcs are just left on during day and only turned off at night.

I have one machine which is pretty much 24/7. But it's not doing anything most of the time, just file storage and remote tasks.

When I move house, and get a proper office/study it'll probably only be on when I'm in, and will be set to shut down or hibernate when it's finished whatever it's doing when I'm not in.

The 1, mainly for folding and downloading. I don't feel bad at the moment as it is heating the room nicely, meaning no wasted power. In the summer it will have to go off to settle my conscience.

My network gateway which does firewalling / nat / dhcp / dns etc. As well as a filestore and download box is on 24/7.

My Mactop was on barring the odd restart here and there for updates and a few times sleeping nigh on constantly for 3 years. That is until I sold it yesterday.

All the other computers in the house are off when not in use.

I have a desktop pc which is only used for games so consequently it's turned off when not gaming & a laptop which is only used for general browsing & stuff which is also turned off when not in use.
Our 4 TV's, microwave oven, hoover & kettle are on 24/7 though just in case we need them at the drop of hat:)

Five on 24/7, plus a lappie which I occasionally use. The desktops run BOINC (a mix of SETI, Einstein, QMC and LHC), which is why they are on all the time. The elec bill from them is about £60 a month.

And yes, everyone I know thinks thinks this is weird. So what...

£60 pound a month...... ouch

How much does it cost to run an average computer 24/7 is it easy to calculate?
