I sent a parcel 1st class recorded today and what a pain that was. The lady at the Post Office asked me what it was worth and (without thinking) I said about £50 and she said it would only be covered for £41 so I said fine. The next price up was about £9 for special delivery which covers for more money. Then I said I'd leave it as it is cos at least I could get £41 back if it went missing and she then said no I couldn't as I'd already said it was worth £50 and wouldn't be able to claim as it would be fraud! How does she work that one out? Surely if the parcel goes missing I can still claim the £41 and have to take a hit on the rest?

There are 3 Post Offices around where I live and each one of them gives you different advice & prices. Why do people in the post office make your life difficult? Do they not want anyone to use them?

They get commission when selling Special Delivery Items.
Anyway, you report as lost, and the paperwork you have to fill in now is phenomenal, and all they will offer is the minimum compensation amount. You really have to fight for the rest.

shes an idiot :)

tell her to look up fraud in the dictionary. Then ask to see the manager/owner and make it clear that you wont be using them again.

I'm sick of post offices too. usually use couriers for anything of decent size even if its a few quid more.

If you want to commit the fraud shes accusing you of then just tell them everything you post worth over £40 is worth £999.

Forgot to say that the old bird in the next booth then came over to butt in and say I wouldn't be able to claim either.

If they were confident about delivering the package they should not be concerned about you having to claim. Really does show what state the business is in when they're more concerned about making sure you're paying for insurance rather than delivering the package.

My usual Post Office experience: stand in line for eternity with ******, old people and screaming babies and then talk to some gutteral foreigner who never smiles or makes eye contact and speaks English as fluently as a toad with a mouth full of poop.

I hate going to the post office. Most of the time in a queue of 20 I'm the only person actually wanting to post anything. Does it look like a &%£$&%*$ bank?

The staff are nice in both Post Offices I use. The more I read this forum the more I become convinced that I actually live in some sort of paradise

Same experience here too.

Walk up, place item on scale, state value and pay the cash.

Always had great service at my local :o

tbh I generally agree, my experience is pretty good with the post office. Sure I have had the odd useless person but you'll get that in most places.

So let me get this right:

Her: whats it worth
You: £50
Her: You can only insure for £41
You: Ok sure its close enough i could claim £41
Her: Oh no, even though you are insuring it, you have said its worth £50 so you cant claim anything if it goes missing!

Crazy mentality

On a claim form I once had to do. I said the value of the item was more than the maximum amount. The amount I asked for was the maximum, and that's what I received.

Also had to provide some proof of the value.

Apart from this one item, I have never lost anything. That will put me at a success rate of over 99% and I suspect it will keep rising. Royal Mail are very good.

Most post office staff aren't very well trained in my experience, at least at your local shop anyway, the bigger ones are much better.
