More info on crash plz..

]Just got back from the 'Ring..

Great weekend, but saw a crash and just a little worried about the outcome.

BMW M5 drop some oil, and 6-7 cars end up everywhere !!

996 GT3 RS - BMW M3 - 997 GT3 RS - Honda Civic - Nissan (not sure of the model, in a bad way)- Scooby and can't remember the other.

The M5 dumped oil pulled off the track and tried to wave cars to slow down, but it was at a fast part of the track, and they could never of stopped !!

I understand the M5 driver was taken away and locked up ?

Any news, please post up. I want to make sure there were no serious injuries, and the M5 driver is ok.

I didn't see it - we were stood at Bergwerk when it went eerily quiet and 3 ambulances and some safety cars went flying past us with their lights on so we drove round to see if we could find out what was going on. Only to be met with loads of police and fire brigade people flying up the road to get in at Pflantzgarden.

The guy in the 200sx apparently has a fractured hip, which is very lucky as the other side of his car was completely mangled! It was apparently all rollcaged up etc which must certainly have helped.

The guy in the white scooby broke his foot (again, all caged up and I read that the steering column broke in the correct places to avoid causing him further damage)

A british E39 M5 was on the grass just after the brow of the hill having lost some fluids (seen posts mentioning his engine went pop so I presume it was engine oil) apparently he had legged it as fast as he could and waved his yellow shirt at everyone coming towards him but it was obviously not enough as it's a pretty fast section of track.

There was a 911 GT3 RS with a missing front bumper and a buckled back wheel, and a EK9 Civic Type R was also involved but I didn't see the damage to that one (Though I think that's the driver in the white DC shirt as he kept looking at the civic's bumper)

There was also an e36 touring which had a heavy rear impact and bad front damage.

The 200sx guy had to be cut out and airlifted to hospital but all I've read suggests he's OK - I presume the cage and bucket seats prevented the emergency services from getting him out through the door due to his injuries and hence had to cut the roof off.

As I say, this is all just info gathered from various forums - but one of the first people to be flagged down by the M5 driver was a marshall so I don't think he would need to exaggerate facts or anything like that!

Pretty scary stuff, but the emergence services sure knew how to act and the helicopter was there in no time.

really does make you question whether its a safe idea to go to the ring with no insurance.

This guy didnt run out of talent, he just had a mechanical failure beyond his control

and the bill for that little accident will no doubt run into 6 figures. Plus the damage to his own engine. Thats going to a very large 6 figure bill i would have thought.

Reminds me of the post on here a few weeks ago about Insurance for the track.

Found this. [quote="WIKIPEDIA]

Drivers interested in lap times (a dangerous thing to worry about, as running stop watches are frequently found in crashed vehicles) often time themselves from the first bridge after the barriers to the last gantry before the exit. In the event of an accident, the local police are known to make note of any timing devices present (stopwatches, etc.) in the police report. Consequently, the driver's insurance coverage may be voided leaving the driver fully liable for any and all damage. Normal, non-racing, non-timed driving accidents should be covered by driver's insurance, but it is increasingly common for UK insurers especially to put in exclusion clauses that mean drivers and riders have third-party cover only.

The 'Ring has caught many people out as there is very little run-off and the Armco barrier will be hit at almost any speed, should a vehicle leave the tarmac. The Teffers straight between Adenauer Forst and Metzgesfeld is known for its high number of expensive accidents.
Drivers who do crash have a responsibility of warning following vehicles that there has been an incident. If an accident occurs typical passerby procedure is to stop only if needed.(Needs include stopping to render first aid or to warn incoming traffic) Follow up accidents are frequent, and the less chaos at a scene, the less chance for another "follow-up" accident to occur. The 'Ring, although being to all intents and purposes a race track when used for racing, still remains a public road when opened to the public, and it is policed as such. Anyone caught or reported as driving dangerously can be fined or banned by the authorities. The costs can also be prohibitive with vehicle recovery, track closure penalties and Armco repairs putting some unfortunates up to €15,000 out-of-pocket

Quite interesting. I know Wikipedia can be edited and all that jazz but isn't usually that far off

There has been a total of €150,000 mentioned for property, which I believe is the cars damaged and the track costs (closure, recovery for all cars, armco etc)

Before it happened we had hired suzuki swifts the day before and had vowed never to risk taking our own cars round again - this just reinforced our thoughts furthermore!
