Is it just where i live or are Audi R8s rather common? 2 in my town and 1 where i work and another 2 i see in a neighbouring town where i go out.

yeah, They are the same price as porsches, so im suprised that they are still a rare car. But having said that, in my town alone there are two R8's and I pretty much see one every time I head into Bristol or the Paintworks. The v10 ones are rare tho...

The V10s and the Spyders are the rarer ones nowadays.

when I visted the Paintworks last week (Bristol) on the way home I saw a black v8 then on the motorway on the interchange there was a white GT V10 R8 heading towards petershead was quite a sight on the road, it was closely followed by a cop car
