Post Your Garden!

Fertilised my lawn 2 months ago and combined with the robot mower constantly taking clippings, it's like an absolute carpet compared to when we moved in, for very little effort.

what mower did you get that would do all of that?

I was talking to my mother about the bottle gardens/terrariums my grandmother used to keep, and it turns out shes got a couple of the original bottles she used to use back in the day (60/70's).
So, after cleaning one up after it'd been sat in her garden for many many years..

It's massive and around 45 litres.

I grabbed some probably unsuitable plants from the local garden centre and lobbed in some gravel, charcoal and finally some compost and then the plants..

I hoping to seal it up and see if it'll outlive me.
Plenty of people have had similar survive for decades without any assistance.

Mines has been going for months now (pretty much the exact same bottle as yours) , sadly it also got tons of mold in it which came out of nowhere one night. I've added some bugs which are meant to help. It's growing it's own mushrooms, so it's allegedly still healthy...

One thing I did with mine was to “cook” the compost in the oven for 30 minutes to kill off any undesirables, and so far so good.
Is yours fully sealed?

Yeah I wish I'd done this in hindsight. No it's still open, mould could be due to being too wet. So hoping it'll eventually die off, if not then I'll rip it apart and start over.

Pic of what it looked like when i moved in two years ago, and then what i have done since, its a rental, so i am only prepared to do so much. The red and yellow slabs were already there, just needed a good clean, had to poison the invasive plant growing along the wall on the left, and then opened up to new boarder areas

Any opinions on mini-greenhouses for growing things chillies or other small amounts of stuff?

This kind of thing I'm talking about:

I don't have space for a full size greenhouse what with the patio, shed, wildflower garden and some lawn but something like the above would fit well against the back wall of the house and it would be directly.South facing and get tons of light and direct sun.

Anyone got one?
What have you grown in it?
Are they worth it if you get a decent one?

Finally got myself a scarifier and aerator. I presume once it is scarified I don't need to aerate? It has two attachments. I guess sometimes you will want to aerate but not scarify.

Moved about 12x 45l buckets of thatch/moss to where I cleared the space with my burning a few weeks back.

I just did a once over with the scarifier. I'll swing by Toolstation to buy some seed. Should I be sprinkling anything else over the top? Should I Scarify again in opposite directions? The problem is finding YouTubers in the right balance of hard core and bodge lol.

Edit: so I put the aerator attachment on and it basically acted like the scarifier again lol. Another 8 buckets:

Do I just buy any old seed?

It won't be an aerator that you have. It'll be a machine with a scarifying cassette (solid blades) and a power raker cassette (spring tines).

An aerator punches holes into the ground around 3 inches or more deep.

The power raker is used at a higher height to remove moss whereas the scarifier is used at a lower height and pulls out moss and thatch into the actual soil

From my own experience and knowledge I have:

1. Cut the grass pretty low
2. Scarify twice in different directions (90 degrees to each other)
3. Overseed with grass seed specific to your needs. This all depends on the environment i.e shady lawn? Clay soil? Sandy soil? (Try TheGrassPeople for seed)
4. Top dress with a light covering of compost
5. Keep seed moist with light watering twice a day (unless it rains)

You can do a lot more but, as you said, you wanted a happy medium between bodge and hard core :)

You're right at the end of the renovation season but, as long as the weather remains warm (soil temps 12oC and above), you should get germination.

We have one, mainly for bringing stuff on and, like now, drying onions, garlic etc

It's a lot better than nothing and just takes a bit more planning :)

Great answer, I was going to say similar.
The only thjing to add to emphasise the end of the renovation season - if you have deciduous trees in your garden, or overhanging your garden, you are probably already too late. The fallen leaves will block out sunlight to new grass shoots and will not be established enough to be able to rake up the leaves.
Just leave it at scarifying for now. It will be good to allow the airflow in the damper months. Maybe just add an autumn fertilizer and moss killer.
Do the 5 step process above in spring.
