Postman Pat!

I think im only starting on part time which is 25hrs a week. Well i think that was what was advertised at the time lol. They said that overtime is on nearly all the time. So i should be looking at 30 minimum. But obviously grounds to get full time etc.

youll easy beat working over 30 hours

especially at first when your still learning the round

Sounds good then :)

Getting jobs is a slow process with these big firms, so many damn stages! I think i applied originally about 8 weeks ago

Its a slow process with most firms. Even basic phone monkey or retail jobs now have multiple application stages.

So when whenever there's a problem with the post, we can all blame Hedge, just like we all blame Scuzi for any flight problems. :p

Congratulations, I have 16 years in Royal Mail, now a manager so if theres anything you need to know then ask:)

Great.

Any advice on what to expect would be appreciated. I like the idea of being out on a round, walking long distances and carryin a heavy bag etc. I am sociable with people too so It would be nice to meet people on the rounds.

The job slot i actually applied for was "Postman With Driving", so I assume after an initial period of being shown the ropes on foot, I might be mainly driving between depots or something? How does that work?

Your first week will just about kill you if they give you a full time round....even a part time round hurts afterwards the first week, feet-wise until you get used to it. Your first day on your own is not fun, you'll end up the last person ready and some of the new starts in my mail centre finished as late as 6pm!!!! on their first day out alone. If you can bear the first week alone it gets so much easier from then on.

That's what I thought before I had heard the "If that's a bill I don't want it!" joke about 200 times :D

I applied for the same jobtitle a year ago, basically it means you MAY get put on a driving job but probably not unless you have experience of driving vans. Someone who started at the same time as me ended up driving to cover for a long term absence but all the duties at RM work on "seniority" i.e the longer you've been there, the cushier job you can choose, hence why most of the drivers and those on rural duties are older gents. Thankfully I have some of that so I am on a round that takes 90 minutes right now. When you're new you won't have your own round and you'll cover whatever needs covered most likely.

Thanks for the reply mate.

I drove a van for a couple of months earlier this year. Drove thousands of miles so Ill try and use that as ammunition on a quest for a cushier role lol

Driving jobs are better in some ways and worse in others....so not "cushy" per se....for example hardly any walking compared to foot deliveries....but the drivers have to drop posties off and if you have a slow coach who can't sort fast enough you could get home hours later. Also drivers generally finish later.

You say you are a manager, what was your role when you started out? Is there ways to work up the ladder?

Well yes, I like getting finished at 10am :D I have a low tolerance for repetition though which makes the job harder, but you don't get bored because you're always working towards getting finished rather than just working until a bell goes. Plus, when you leave the mail centre you're your own man and can do your job however you like. I like cats too so I get to stroke lots of them on residentials. You'll probably share my hatred of dogs after being a postie for a while.

The pay's certainly not bad for a job that's almost impossible to get fired from, too. It's not the job I wanted (basically a stopgap until I can get something with my useless degree) but I don't see myself getting tired of it either.

So once you meet your criteria for your daily round, can you just head home early?.

I see!...

when youve posted 1 bag full of mail, where do you get the rest? does a guy in a van bring it to you?
