Hi.

I was going to have some baked potatos, so I cleaned them, pircked them, microwaved them for 5 mins, I'm going to use the oven too, the thing is, when I took them out of the microwave, it appears a stick, jelly like substance has appeared/ came out of them.

Anyone have any ideas what this is?

Thanks
Will.

lol very funny :p

Seriously, what is it? I'm hungry!!!!!!!!

starchy water? Why is it really sticky but then it ends up turning into some jelly like substance?

it's sticky because (and this is if my school chemistry has taught me anything and survived) starch is made of a carbohydrate which when broken down into it's main enzymes are basically glucose/sugar

probably waaay wrong, but that's what I remember lol

Simply its sticky because starch is sticky, its the same reason if you dont rinse some kinds of rice or you stir them too much when their cooking it becomes a sticky mess

The microwave should never be used when preparing tatties of any sort :D

This is one of the very few things I think microwaves are acceptable for. A large baked potato is more convenient if it's in the microwave for 10 mins and then the oven for 25-30. Nice soft centre and crispy skin.

the man knows his spuds!

though 25-30 minutes in an oven? my ovens in the past must've been useless, usually takes about an hour, unless yours is some sort of incinirator too :p

Well I usually say 30 mins, then forget about it and then realise sometime later. God knows if it's been 30 mins or an hour :D That's the great thing, it's hard to overcook them.

your microwave gave it radiation poisoning, it will take a few years before it can recover and u can eat it.
