Potential new PS3 owner - Noob questions

I am potentially going to become a PS3 owner.
The main reason is for the BR player - I've been planning on moving to BR but have been waiting for the profile 2 player situation to sort itself out.
I now hear it may be May/June before we see any Profile 2 players on the market and as the player in the PS3 can be updated I may go this route.

All indications are that the PS3 makes a good BR/DVD player - would anyone disagree with that?

Now the big question - does anyone know if there are likely to be any PS3 package changes coming soon?
A 40GB PS3 will cost me less than £300.
However I don't particularly fancy making a purchase soon and then finding that in a months time they are changing the design, making it smaller, increasing the HD size and lowering the price.
Sure I know that will probably happen at some point in the future - just want to make sure it isn't too soon.

Finally, there is obviously a want to attach the PS3 to the internet.
All of my computer equipment is upstairs, along with the ADSL modem/router etc.
So running a CAT5 cable from upstairs to where the PS3 would sit (front room) isn't ideal.
I do however have a wireless access point.
As far as I can tell the PS3 doesn't come with any wireless features, however is there any reason at all why I couldn't use one of the wired-wireless bridges available on the market?
I'm thinking along the lines of the Linksys WET54G?

Thanks guys.

The PS3 is rated very highly as a BD player and also as an upscaling DVD player, Its possibly not the best BD player out there but for the price and all the other features i dont think its bettered.
Nobody knows about bundles and price drops in the future, but i doubt a new model (apart from colours) will appear for at least another year. The HDD size is not important as any 5400 rpm 2.5" sata drive can be used in the PS3.
The wireless is standard in all UK PS3 models so you can just use that rather than using a bridge.

My T3 mag does speculate about a PS3 slim. Looks like a Wii with that big 'frisbee' bit stuck on the side. Apparently using 45nm chips rather than 90nm.

Says something about end of 2008, doubt it is anything more than rumour though.

I can't think you've done a whole lot of research into the Playstation3.

There will be no changes to the size of the Playstation 3 for quite a while, they've only just released the 40gb model.
The PS3 is a very good Blu-Ray player.
The PS3 also has wireless out of the box.

Thanks for the replies.

I will admit I haven't done much research into the PS3.
I knew there was a 60GB version - we bought one of those in at work last year and then subsequently sold it at our Christmas auction as we'd finished our testing on it.

I knew that the general feeling was that it was a good BR & Upscaling DVD player and the only unit that will be upgradeable to Profile 2 - I just wanted to make sure the good people of OcUK agreed :)

Thanks also for the news on wireless - makes life a whole lot easier.
Right - time to go and look for the best deals available now.

Thanks again.

Check out some pics of what it can produce in this other thread, but it is hooked up to my kuro. Anyhow the blu-ray and dvd upscaling are fantastic, i think they are the standout feature rather than being able to play games.

Switched on the wireless the other day after plugging in my bebox. Selected a few of the auto options, typed in the WEP key, and 10 seconds later i was connected, and playing COD4 and burnout in minutes online.

You need to get COD and burnout paradise as your first 2 games, they both look sublime (best games on PS3) and will take away your life. Then keep an eye out on avforums for the dvd bargain thread which frequently tells you where the best blu-ray bargains are.

On the 60GB, do you know if it does a good job of upscaling PS2 to 720p/1080p on HDMI?

I assume that it has to upscale it

Yeah, you can see how the ATi scaler on the 360 makes all the difference when it comes to playing last-gen games. Even with the PS3's smoothing, the graphics still look terrible!

Seems to depend greatly on the game. Metal Gear Solid 2 looks great upscaled for example. PS1 games odviously less so amazing but again it depends on the time of game, Crash Bandicoot looks fairly decent still upscaled whereas the likes of Resident Evil which use pre-rendered backgrounds dont fair as well.

Dont expect any miracles though, all it does is increase the resolution.

I knew about the lack of PS2 support on the newer 40GB models.
This isn't an issue to me as I didn't own a PS2 (pr PS1 for that matter).
In fact this is very much a return to consoles - the last one I actually owned was...wait for it...An Original Sega Master System.
I say original because Super Hang-On came on card and the built-in game involved moving a small snail around a maze.

Anyway, I digress.
So apart from a DS this is the first console I will have owned for a very long time.
I have a Samsung LE40F86 1080p television which this will be attached to.
It's primary use is as a BR player and also to up-scale my current DVD library.
As an added bonus it will play games.

I'm right in assuming that the PS3 packs tend to only come with one controller? (Will need to get a second as the wife will be playing too).

You're correct, it only ships with one controller.
Many here will recommend you order a seperate controller from Asia, the DS3 which is an upgrade to the Six-Axis featuring rumble (as well as being a better controller).

Give her the Six-Axis :p.

Lol, yeah. tell her you have a special lightweight controller for her and get yourself a DualShock3 ;)

So the DualShock3 controllers are the ones to own then?
I can see them at around £32 delivered from Hong Kong via the Bay.

I'm assuming that at some point they will be available directly in the UK?
