I personally see no point as to why Sony would do this.

They currently have the market share with the most powerful console. I just cannot see the point

It also might backfire and alienate early adopters.

Only realistic possibility is ship with a hybrid drive IMO.
 
Hmm neve happen. It would **** too many people off.

EDIT: the idea of an additional processing box for VR could work though.

I can see the slim PS4 console coming with improved hardware for reduced power draw, but not a 4.5 console. It would split the market to much.
 
slim/more efficient maybe but higher power? sony would shot it self in the foot if they did it! I'd be very very peeved.
 
Would depend how they went about it. I don't think they would get away with releasing games that didnt work on the current PS4. It would probably be a case of, PS4 runs say Battlefield 5 at 900P 60fps where as the PS4.5 runs it 1080p 60fps (perhaps with some additional settings turned up too). Current machine would still exist and be supported, there would just be a higher tier for those who want it.

Maybe if they offered some sort of upgrade programme that could work?
 
A few years ago I would have said fragmenting console performance wise would be unthinkable, but hasn't the Nintendo DS gone through a few iterations now?

More likely I expect a refresh of both XB1 and PS4 that'll stream/play 4K video content.
 
If Sony want to engage in some shooting themselves in the foot then so be it. Cant see it happening though. They just need to keep getting decent games on the system and ride out this gen. This would be a PR disaster move out of the book of MS.

Save the upgrade for the next console.

I was thinking more along the lines of people who don't own a PS4 yet. To them it'd just be seen as the PS4 price being kept artificially high while its competition gets cheaper.

I highly doubt developers want to be catering for multiple SKUs either.
 
Consoles should be trying to run 1080p 60fps at the absolute minimum in this day and age.

Nintendo NX might shake things up but Nintendo probably wont go down the horsepower route :(

What are MS Sony and Nintendo gonna do when everyone has a 4K TV and demand games at native resolutions i wonder.
