Potholes

After the recent cold weather many of the main roads around here have got serious pothole damage, I mean dozens of them within a 100 yard stretch, most of them at least 6 inches deep.

There is even one hole just around the corner from me that is so bad that you could easily lose a wheel to it and I suspect if you went into it at low speed you wouldn't get out, it's about a foot deep!

The road across my house is cracked across the whole width which I've not seen before.

It's going to be absolute carnage for quite some time as the damage is really widespread and I don't think it's doing to get properly fixed until the spring.

Tell me about it. Out and about today in the MX5 and I've been steering all over the place trying to avoid them. If I happen to hit one by mistake it doesn't half make me wince :(

Let's hope the council spot them in reasonable time!

Ever been to the Slyfield estate where all the car dealers near Guildford? That is the single worst road I've driven down for potholes.

You must report these to your local council or if you lose a tyre, you cannot claim from them. There is usually a link on line to report them. The country roads around here in Bucks are so bad that the council will pay for bust tyres without too much fuss.

I would love to hold a camera out of the car window and film the last part of my journey home each day as it is no longer a joke. The roads got badly patched last winter and are now full of holes again.

Oh god yes. I've been on more comfortable green-laning sessions!

I get the impression Slyfield is a private road which is why nothing gets done. Mind, Surry CC are the worst I've ever known for road repairs.

I was told it's owned by two councils and neither really wants to cough up, especially as massive trucks and lorries with 10 cars on them turn up daily. It's great to quickly check the ride on any car you're test driving though.

Slightly OT but the Audi dealership there are useless, I went in there having phoned up asking about a car, I got there and was told I would be seen shortly. 25 minutes later and still nothing so I ask and am told someone turned up and basically just walked in and said I want to buy that car so they were dealing with him first  and there was no one else to help me, despite the fact I could see 3-4 management type sitting in offices chatting and messing about.

i'm claiming for damage to my rear setup on the e36 from the council. massive holes and troughs around a corner in the city centre. although apparently if you are the first to report that particular hole you cannot be compensated.

hmm

O/T but...

Your sig on the black OcUK theme bothered me somewhat so I fixed it so anyone with any forum theme can enjoy it =]

I've got "Semi Solid Forged" alloys on my car which means they're 1) very light and 2) buckle at the sight of a pothole. :( I hit one last year which didn't really register as being massive but resulted in a buckled alloy. :(

I think I'd have a heart attack driving down the road you've described.

The problem is, they dont maintain the roads properly, water gets into cracks, freezes, expands, crumbles and then leaves potholes.

I guess if you are busy using road tax to spend on other areas, it wont get any better. Be careful out there people, I predict it will get worse before better.

The same thing happened last year with all the snow, and many of those pot-holes have not yet been filled. So don't get too hopeful that they will be fixed. I mean, it's not like we pay road tax or anything is it?

I was going to start a thread about potholes too, some very "nice" ones have appeared over the last few weeks. Impossible to see in the dark and atleast 6" deep!

belgian roads are usually in poor condition, but there are some massive potholes on the motorway of all places.
only in the french-speaking part of belgium mind. bloody frenchies :p
